Stick a number-plate on the big flat bit and it'd look fine.

Because they think they should look futuristic and different.

Ever listened to modern 'classical' music?

It's st.

There's a basic reason why Mozart sounds great.

Where Tesla have been very clever is hiding all their tech under cars which are fundamentally mundane. Most people are mundane.

OP YES!

Been saying this for ages. The only reasonable looking EV is the i8 and that's £100k.

The Tesla models aren't bad, the S is OK looking for it's class but nothing special and it's still £70K+. I had high hopes for the Model 3 but it looks like a Focus that's been in a wind tunnel for too long, bland and inoffensive rather then really great to look at.

The mainstream manufacturers finally seem to be catching up with Audi and BMW starting to introduce EV cars which actually look like their normal range. The A3 E-tron and BMW's 3 series for instance. Still not breathtaking but a step in the right direction.

This is a chance to make EV's look futuristic. Where's my sleekly shaped coupe\saloon which sounds like a tie-fighter that we've been seeing in science fiction films for years?

You could say the same for every single car (IC or EV) in the same class as the Focus, they all look like smooth turds because of aerodynamics.

Arguably the latest electric cars are no worse than the latest IC cars- Ford, Vauxhall, Citroen, Hyundai, MG, all SUV's and people carriers etc, all goping jelly mould sh*te

Frankly I'd be happy to drive a "mundane" Tesla during the week so long as it leaves petrol for the 7 at the weekend ;-)

Personally I think EV's should look different, an EV with a fake grill is like Katie Price trying to get on BigNaturalBoobs.com, looks fake, is fake- Yuk :-)

It's not a full EV but I've been driving around in a Golf GTE this week.

It's not bad. The electric mode is weird as it's completely silent. It just looks like a normal Golf apart from a few fancy lights on the front and some blue bits.

I quite like the idea of it, being able to drive around on electric, recharging as you brake. The petrol engine in this GTE is a bit rubbish and the handling is a little bit playstation. It's got flappy paddles for absolutely no reason at all but the actual idea of driving on electric is great!

I really like the fact that it's just a normal Golf and it doesn't look extremely silly like the i3's.

It's not so much that they're ugly as they all look like some cutesy toy that you'd give an infant to play with in the bath. That is, except for the BMW i8 and the Tesla Model S, neither of which a mere mortal can afford. What wrong with producing something small, low and sleek looking?

I think the issue we're struggling to come to terms with is how different electric car drivetrain layouts are and what the optimal cooling solutions for those look like. We're so used to crash-reg compliant ICE cars with their inefficient (hot) engines in the front, with loads of holes in the front to cool the engine adequately, that EVs look weird as they still have to meet those crash regs, but they just don't have anything untidy (and drag inducing) to fill the front end with.

I'm personally glad they have moved past the "shiny black fake grille-face" that the Model S has.

It's true. You need to spend £100k on an EV to get a decent looking one and even when you do the sound is missing.

I agree the Zoe is fairly inoffensive looking, the Leaf is still gopping and the i3 is worse than the Leaf, somehow. I saw a "go electric" advert the other day with all the top selling EVs and thought.... yeah - this isn't for me.

Unfortunately they messed up the MPV (SUV?) horribly!

Those falcon wing doors are so clever but I can't help but feel that having sliding doors (on rails concealed in the bottom edge of the door, actuated by clever stuff (TM) going on in the sill - not van-style sliders on the bodywork) would have been a better use of weight (and its distribution)/time/effort. Imagine the front and rear doors parting at the (nonexistant) B-pillar and sliding (with the illusion of hovering) to positions roughly in line with the axles.

It's funny, I think the i8 is amongst the worst. It looks reasonable if weird in pictures but in the metal it's a truly vile car to my eyes.

Some of the details are over fussy, again the temptation to make it look "futuristic" has meant the designers didn't know when to put the pencil down but the overall shape and dimensions are great IMO. It certainly beats the weird box like shapes most EV's seem to be.

I'd actually take issue with that - I'd say most new cars are bland/anonymous with one or 2 that are gorgeous and a handful that are gopping.

This is a massive case in point, why does it HAVE to look like a breadvan? I know they are the most prolific hybrid available but it could do 1000mpg and I still wouldn't have one, just so so ugly. Are greenies blind or do they simply not care about aesthetics?

it's a modern equivalent of a hair-shirt or self-flagellation or indeed being able to tell everyone you're a vegan without even opening your mouth wink

Yes I guess in that context it makes sense. A decent looking car is sinful, to greenies the automobile is a necessary evil at best so should never be made to look beautiful else it could cause temptation and idolisation. It's basically the car equivalent of a burka hehe
