They definitely have a certain appeal, they look nice & comfortable, which would probably tip it for me as I'm fed up of noisy hot hatches!

There are only 9 xantias for sale on eBay UK at the moment... Incredible really as they were everywhere a few years ago! No activa's on there, I can only imagine they'll rise in value over time.

I think that was all your boxes ticked?

Used to live in the Peaks myself (Chapel) and mine was superb fun.
I quite like the looks of those, but they only come with auto boxes which supposedly go a loooong way to spoiling the fun.

This is possibly the most fun end of the spectrum to drive, there's an awful lot of cool cars available and you don't have to be too precious about them. My 205 has recently had a fair bit spent on it (full respray, leather seats re-trimmed) and has made me be a bit overprotective of it. This has led me to look a 306 GTi-6's. So that's my suggestion, I'm too much of a Peugeot fanboy to actually buy a Renault myself but if I wasn't I'd be looking towards a 182 too I think.

Definitely a lovely position to be in though, is there anything better than a designated B road blaster?!

They aren't an auto box in the way you're thinking.
They're a robotic sequential manual (with a proper clutch) and an automatic mode.
In other words they have a sequential manual gearbox with a computer controlled selection motor and clutch actuator.
Auto mode is pretty dire but has its uses. If you get one with paddles they're far more enjoyable otherwise you push the gear stick forward to go up a gear or back to go down. Toyota did a similar system as an option in the MR2.
Shifts aren't instant (they were way before modern dual clutch gearboxes) but once used to it they're perfectly fine.
They're a car that benefits from taking some time to learn to get the best from.

I'm on edge of peak District and will be out in Derbyshire tomorrow in my go kart (mr2 roadster)
Ping a pm and you can have a drive if insured 3rd party on other cars. Bend it mend it etc applies. It's a lot of fun.

Meet Lol. Fast on the straights and not really much need to slow for the corners and if you do the torque catapults you out again, the best car I have owned.

Just noticed you had a £3k budget, i'll leave the post as it is just in case you wanted to spend more..

I would go for something with more torque than a 172/182 sure they are pretty fun in the corners but they suffer from a lack of torque low down in my opinion and it's one of the reasons why i love my Polo gti so much (I've just come from a 172 which I owned for a couple of years)

I had a remapped 1.8t Seat FR, 200 bhp, was pretty fun but had to sell as was tiring on longer journeys. worth a shot, can be had for 1.5 - 2 .5k for cupras.

For £3k?

No drive or garage?

Left out on the street away from the house in all weathers?

It's not a million miles away, especially when you factor in how cheap 7 insurance is compared to the likes of a 172. Granted the parking is an issue, but a toy does not need to be kept within walking distance of your house?

Starting low:

Little bit more, but still around the ballpark:

Absolute power isn't a must, if it handles like an absolute go-kart to make up for it. I'd only sacrifice some handling performance for laugh-out-loud power.

Pity the Fabia diesel VRS handles like an absolute pig, that sort of torquey motor would make it quite funny.

In this case, I can definitely recommend the Suzuki Swift Sport. I've had one as my daily driver for around 9 months (currently for sale!) and for B road fun it's fantastic. I've found myself doing more motorway journeys than I'd like, but I'm having a fair bit of trouble finding something half as fun to replace it with. The handling is superb and the power is enough, you do have to work the gearbox to get the best from it though. Might be worth a look.
