Think a few people on here miss the point of Shed of the Week.

Its not fast, it is FWD, it isn't the best handling car, but hey, its not a Ferrari or a £5K hot hatch. What it is, is a £675 car that looks rather nice, probably wont be unreliable and isn't rusty or particularly old. As a bonus it comes with a V6. For the money, I would say it ticks most of the shed boxes rather well....

Were these supposed to have been unsuccessful? I see the things everywhere.

From the reviews I've read, the problem with them is that the looks make cheques that neither the performance nor the handling can cash; get past the styling and they're apparently a bit dull. I'd always mentally written them off in favour of the Celica because of that.

Mind you for v6 coupe that looks like that at that price, I'd love to hear that the press were wrong.
I always find it quite interesting to read the opinions on here in conjunction with the road tests when they were new. They don't seem to have had bad write-ups although the 'thirsty' label is probably deserved looking at the Autocar real world mpg figures.
I guess for a 2.7 litre they can be seen as slow but at only 165bhp it's not going to be too stressed and can jump the lights with a Williams Clio or GT86 to 100mph which considering its weight isn't so bad. Curiously chosen gear ratios as well, it needs 4th gear to reach 60mph so that can't help the 7.3 second time. £675 is cheap enough as well.

Even EVO mag liked it when it was new, tested against the Celica 190 and Astra 888 Coupe - they gave it the group test'win'. I guess some cars reputations fade over the years whilst others shine ever brighter. It'll be interesting to see how some of today's machinery is viewed in 15 years

( How accurate is that speedo! Bang on up to 100mph - you rarely see that degree of accuracy )

What on earth is going on with those gear ratios? Third gear is rather long and there seems barely any point in 6th

Yeah, made me wonder too

One of the lowest first gears I've noticed for a big petrol V6......and then 2nd runs out soon after

Still, performance isn't to be sniffed at ........for £675

Total rot boxes and wrong wheel drive.

That said, if you find a good one they make a nice looking alternative to a boring/ugly hatchback.

I'm sure it's only the older shape ones which are total rot boxes

My sister looked at a few of the newer examples a couple years back, couldn't find one that wasn't showing bad rust around the front end.

Are you confusing this car with the previous generation models (which do rust), are do you just enjoy making stuff up?

I was looking at one of these a few weeks ago, lovely red leather interior, black outside, looked really nice. However I was completely put off by the boring/basic dash/inside.

Errr..they really aren't.

Had a 2.0 as a company car for about 3 months some years ago. Quite enjoyed it. Seem to remember it had nice glowing blue dials at night.

Perhaps it's our salty Northern roads, but we couldn't find a good example. She ended up buying an astra of all things rolleyes

I had a brand new 2.0S back in 2004, a lovely car with a nice rasp on the exhaust and leather seats.

The V6 version was no faster really, but heavier on juice. Go for the 2.0.

Get a nice one for around 3k...you won't regret it.

I take your point re the smaller engine - would have been interesting to see how quick the V6 might have been with some longer lower gear ratios - similar to the MX6 perhaps which had roughly the same power

Thank you kmack for so eloquently validating my "badge snobbery" comment.

If he really has a McLaren 12C in his garage I would venture he isn't Hyundai's target demographic anyway.
