I'll add another one lick

What a great tool for shipping the family down to one's holiday home on the continent.

I'm a sucker for those pre-Mercedes-buy-out AMG's. Properly cool that.

<Sad fact of life and a moan alert>

For reasons I would not bore you with, for the last week I have been driving a 2002 M3 SMG. It is a Walkers' Car and it has been bought/sold by them 4 times. Tight as a drum in general, with some remedial work to sort out some minor paint, so it looks spotless on 18" in gunmetal grey. KW3 CS, Porsche 996 big brake conversion with Carbonne Loraine RC5 and NANKANG NS2R soft compounds. Very subtle, very stealth and almost totally OEM. I a///M loving it! So one thing led to another, and now I am on the hunt...

BUT!!!

Buying a decent M3 is proving to be difficult...

- sick of tts pretending they are private sellers while having another 4 or 5 cars on AT or on Ebay - I am not that stupid
- sick of tts who cannot spell to save their life - spellcheckers are everywhere, yet must be difficult to use
- sick of CAPITAL LETTERS - I am reading, no need to shout at me
- sick of clichés - no, it is not that fast anymore, and no, I am not faint hearted
- sick of cars with service histories, which have more holes that a BrazzerS "performer's" tights
- sick of mismatched tyres and bubbling arches - no, they are not patina and they are not to be expected on a 14yrs old car, which you are tying to sell for top money
- sick of "fully loaded" cars - no they are not, especially without heated seats, Sat Nav and Comp pack for example
- sick of "investment" talk - no they are not an appreciating asset, which will double in value overnight and make my penis grow by another 15" yet

<rant over>

Now then, if someone has an ok E46 M3 with SMG, no sunroof and heated leather to go? Not mileage sensitive, but ideally Black or Imola Red, I would be happy to discuss.

P.S. There are three of us (a well known threadist included) who have created a mini M3 Cup VLN. First outing subject to 2 of us getting cars is at the Circuit Days Nurburgring Track Day. What could possibly go wrong? laugh

A bit over 12 months into E46M3 ownership and I definitely love it.
Mine is helped largely by the carbon airbox, so I get to enjoy the induction noise which makes me giggle.
Performance is akin to the 355, as in not terrifying but sufficient to be enjoyable and make you concentrate.

You're right in that they've fallen into barry boy territory somewhat, so there are a few duds about. there's sometimes the odd gem which pops up on the cutters website, so worth looking there (mingled with some optimistic pricing also).

Try not to get too dispirited on the hunt and I wish you every enjoyment when you find one.

Dang! Sold. That's totally worth every penny of the £10k asking price. Shame that I missed it...

This is going to be my 3d E46 M3. Still think that the E46 M3 is peak M3. BMW just got it so right. And yes, I think it is better than the E30! Before you whisk me away to the stake, I have a lot of miles with a great E30 M3 under my belt and also owned a M3-ed 320iS for a while. Great, but the E46 fits the role of reliable and comfortable family hack/odd trackday/lark about with mates in Wales/Germany brief so much better.

I have found a couple of cars, which may fit the bill. Stay tuned. SWMBO said that having two silver Porsches is enough, so the M3 has to be a good colour. One of the cars that I like the look of is actually Silver biggrin but with Imola leather... The other is Imola with Black Leather, but not much done to it... Argh, why can't I be happy with a leased Golf 7?

I showed my wife a Laguna Seca one and she said that looks like a chav's car. No way would I get in that.

Not my words, Lynn...

My wife says the same about mine.
Especially when I don the driving gloves.

She particularly dislikes the matching blue leather and the induction noise... marriage bliss etc

You don't want the Sat-Nav. IME it breaks, a lot, and is very expensive to sort.

What's the "Comp pack"? It was an E9X option or CS on E46? Or am I wrong?

Sat Nav is not a deal breaker at all. It is surprisingly functional for a 10yrs old unit, which is 16yrs old as a design. Comp pack on the E46 M3 was CSL front discs and maybe slightly stiffer suspension (don't hold me on the last one). My first M3 - a LHD German Sep 2001 car, which I had more than 10yrs ago, had a Sat Nav only showing directional arrows Becker style and could only bark commands in German. Now that was funny...

Quite high average speed then - is a 3000hrs for 150k miles. Must have been motorway miles (which kind of defeats the purpose of the car) or caned on track. Only way to buy it would be with a leakdown test and Diff inspection. And still would have a 996.2 for £65k...

I owned a "comp pack", the CS, and the changes run a little deeper than that. They're circa double the price of a facelift standard car, significantly better though.
The sat nav on that car failed twice and was about 2.5k a pop to sort under warranty. A TomTom does it better for a fraction of the price. I seem to remember the sat nav on that car failed when MattOz owned it after me, too.
