But... if you want a car with scalpel-like precision for trackdays where striving for something that feels like the perfect lap is the name of the game then yes absolutely it’s worth it.
It's that age-old paradox wrapped up in a conundrum - for the same money you could buy a cooking 911 and something better than the GT3 on track, but then you'll continually find yourself in the wrong car at any given time. Or you buy a/that GT3 and accept the compromises in order to get the biggest overlap on the Venn diagram.

In nearly 20 volumes of thread, I think that may be the first mention of Venn diagrams. Kudos.

yes indeed.

Btw ferris, I envy you the NSX - never driven one but had the honour of a passenger ride (same friend of the Chief that had the E34 3.8). Magic. The GTRs are also great in my opinion - organic and interesting in a way most would not credit. The chief had a Middlehurst (RB) R33 “500R” in ‘98. It was epic. He also traded his first E39 M5 against the last official UK R34 (also middlehurst motorsport supplied). The latter only got as far as stage one (400bhp) before being sold to some very keen gentlemen from The Very North (another story!) but the drive back on delivery miles was memorable as I did 80% of the trip. That thing felt hewn from solid (ride, chassis stiffness, engineering integrity - interior plastics be damned) and had lovely steering, a rewarding gearshift and a gravelly but sonorous straight six. It also turned on a proverbial sixpence (tramlining and skittering are foc extras but not optional). Damned interesting as delivered - a little freer breathing really does enhance the fun without much risk, cost or fuss. Slippery slope though, as with all modifications cool

I’d take a GT3 or an NSX (R!) first but the GTR would not be a consolation podium place - I can’t see how it doesn’t fit the same sort of mould in terms of an intriguing and capable icon, complementing any collection.

As a car to drive from A to B or to the man in the street then no of course it’s not worth 5x a good Carrera.
I can confirm that they're quite a fantastic experience for A to B drives. driving

Or you own a GT3 AND a Caterham. getmecoat

Hindsight... Last one was a long way from standard though, so probably not for the “collector”.
GTR’s with desirable mods are equally as popular as the immaculate standard cars. The GTR’s reputation for the majority stems from the 1000bhp plus tuner cars of the 90’s-early 00’s. A lot of the cars that have landed in the US have either been modified or were modified and have had more work done on arrival.

yes
No doubt about it.
One of my favourite drives ever was when a mate chucked me his keys in about 2003(?) to drive from Birmingham to Oulton Park in a 996.2 GT3. Sublime car. I’ve fancied one ever since. That black one at 911v would do nicely thanks!

No doubt, but like everything else, the standard cars are the ones for the investor/speculator.

As far as moderns go I have to admit that a 996 GT3 is right up there for me in the desirability stakes.

But right now so is one of these....

Great character, amazing chassis, just the right amount of power in my opinion (expoitable in the real world), look 'special' and sound fantastic.

FRP is certainly an eminently nomable modern classic. I expect prices are "doing the dance" as is the current vogue. Sigh.

Commensurately better than a cooking 1.7?
No.

But there is that desirability factor that is difficult (impossible) to put a price on.

I love how subtle the styling additions are on the FRP.

See the new civic type R for how such things should not be done.

Can you supercharge the 1.7 Zetec? Must be a kit from somewhere.

I'm sure VI FRP is local to me...

Had a new engine/rebuild a year or two ago.

EDIT: Scratch that, it's two letters FRP but don't think it's VI

Oh, hi thread the E34 broke on me, twice, got fixed, then broke again.

Gearbox twice, fuel pump went last weekend.

Still love it though, even if it is a bit of a shed now :-)

Not looking forward to parking it up and driving round in a diesel hatch, but 15mpg as a student is just stupid...
