Was hoping for a 90 20v when I saw the rims. Denied frown

Here is a bit of a head fk one...

Mrs Cheb wants a new car, but she loves the X5 4.8iS that we currently use. New shape - no thanks. E70 is too big for her. Hence I had a sneaky look at 2013 X3s. It has to be a 35d MSport. Anyway, it appears that £25k will buy you an 2013 Approved Used X3 with all the bells and whistles with about 30k on the clock.

Then for whatever reason I looked at FFRRs. Gosh! The same £25k buys me a 2012 4.4TDV8 FFRR Westminster with 33k on the clock. Ok, not from Land Rover, but still? Are they really that ste that no one wants them? Or are they the bargain of the century? Ok it is big, but Mrs Cheb loves the design and thinks it will be a classic one day... Shall I go and drive one? Or just keep the iS, which dynamically puts most other SUVs to shame even today...

Nope. The previous one. But the X3 has just been replaced too. Still - they are the same vintage...

Gents, could anyone recommend an E39 specialist in Manchester/The NW.

My 523i Touring is running a little lumpy around 1.5K revs.

Thanks

£15k gets you a nice 3.6 twin turbo diesel, the JLR unit before the 2010 facelift. My mate Harry Metcalfe reckons that's the one to go for, although economy on the 4.4 is undoubtedly better, £10k buys a lot of fuel. Plus you can remap the 3.6 for more economy.

I really want one of these...

Apparently the X3 35d has the comparable Macan licked in every department except image... Cayenne - it would have to be a Turbo - the X5 is genuinely fast for an SUV 0-60 in 5.9 according to the ‘Mericans who loved it during group tests back in the days. A Turbo Cayenne is at least mid-30s for a decent one...

I was just staggered by the apparent value for money in the form of FFRR. I absolutely hate the RRS in all its forms, Discos (except the early ones, but they are even older than the X5) and my other pet hate - the Evoque. I have always liked the original RR, the P38 was a monumental turd - had a mate with one from new - and now the L322 appeals both as a design and massive waftiness, and opulence for a sensible amount of dough.

Despite Mrs Cheb’s protestations, an X5M is in the running - pointless, I know... But the FFRR struck me as a car which is appropriate now, that I have just gone the wrong side of 40 and I have plenty of other cars in various garages Ha! to provide entertainment....

It would have to be the 4.4 I am afraid If I take it further. No replacement for displacement and also, buy cheap buy twice.

Watch this re the 3.6 vs. the 4.4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gl51reRXxgE

I am sorely tempted... but then reverse man maths went like this:

Want a FFRR. Budget not really a factor but don't really need one so keep it 'reasonable'. Needs to be a classic, non-blingy L322.

Watched the above video: £15k gets you a great 3.6.

Then thought a bit more money gets you the 4.4.

Then thought, if I'm spending £25k what do I do with the E46 M3, my current daily? Something will have to go.

Hmm.. if I stick with an early petrol V8 4.4, they are comically cheap because 17mpg. The cheapest one on PH is £3,500. Right colour, right spec.

For £3,500 I could just buy it and stick it in the barn and the mrs wouldn't even know! Until I start using it obviously. And it's basically a station car and occasional client visits and stuff, I do about 7k a year in the daily so the economy doesn't really matter. Hmm...

I like the look of this one https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...

It takes more than an air suspension error to put me off :-)

Fark! yikes Good to know there are still some amazing bargains around these days.

Cheb, I believe the petrol Cayenne S of the 2nd gen (2010/11 onwards) is good for a 5.9 0-60. I've got an old 2008 one that apparently do high 6s and they go well enough. With the air suspension and PASM they're pretty ridiculous in the corners.

That said, I'm thinking I might go a bit 'One life, live it' and put some big BF Goodrich boots on and keep the suspension in the high setting. biggrin

In other news, reading an article about a new VW. 2 litre turbo, 197hp, 0-60 in 6.7, 1355kg.

The new Polo GTi. A car that 25 years ago weighed around 800kg!

It's not bad actually. Obviously still a heavy old bus, but it can shift along, and I love the noise

TBH I'd have little interest in it if was a diesel, it's just the combination of SUV and that engine that does it for me

Thoughts:

1. The new Slowlo GTi is a fatty. Handsome but essentially a pre-shrunk Golf.

2. L322s + small wheels = yes please (and I generally dislike SUVs). Bargain.

3. Er...

We had a V8 L322 as tow car a few years ago and it was a fab ol' thing although that had suspensions sulks from time to time. It had done around 120k miles iirc when we replaced it.
