I just found that thread whilst doing some Googling, by pure coincidence.

Still seems to be on sale on the Quarry website (POA).

Bet that's a real hoot!

Jelly.

I have not driven anything aside from the R53 (fun but not naughty enough) for ages and am getting antsy!

Waxing lyrical about cheap Clio running costs is away to bite me in the arse. Garage bill will be knocking on £1k and that's not including a cambelt or damper refurb, ouch!
It's a rare but brilliant feeling when the final bill is about £350 cheaper than the number you had in your head.

Finally, after 3.5 years of ownership, I have working cruise control too.

Also loving his S65 powered 1 Series. No point swapping a donkey if it's not in fact a shire horse hehe
Blimey, amazing. I think the owner might be the chap I wanted to buy a nice 964 from back around 2012/2013 but I didn't sell my old Alfa in time. He had some nice stuff including a race 328 Fez I think.

And the chap who built the V8 1M. eek Skillz.

braddo - You can always tell carriers of the recessive gene, irrespective of budget we find the means to be slightly silly about what most regard as mere transport! Long may it continue smile

Loon - I know, right? Those proportions and that interior just say “covet me, for I am a hoot to bathe, bimble or broadside in the forest stage!”

What do we think? Golf R with the Audi turbo 5-pot:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volkswagen-Golf-R-MK6-R...

Personally - I like it (lose the Lambo brake decals), especially if it can be had for £15k.

Interested to see if it sells...

Other end of the spectrum but on a similar theme... How about a Cit C2 with the Audi 1.8T?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Citroen-C2-With-Audi-1-...

Or a Cit AX with the VTS/ 106 GTi 16v engine:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/citroen-ax-vts-16V-conv...

That's a lot of fun for £1k (where it 'sold' last time) if you can wield some spanners!

Lovely ‘scorts. Can’t believe how pricey these are but still just about obtainable for the committed.

Dom - I agree that the golf is interesting. Like a more affordable RS3 (how the huff the latter is currently a 50k car is beyond me - and the models higher up manage to make it almost look like relatively reasonable value!). Thing is, the first gen RS3 is not going to be much more, so you have to really want a heavily modded golf (and whatever the perceived benefits might be - rarity / stealth / handling balance?) to take that option. The smaller hatches make more sense from that perspective and in terms of usable fun, but I do like the 5 cylinder lump very much. A pal has the current RS3 and as transport with mod cons and performance to spare delivered with aural flair, it’s hard to argue against. This despite flappy paddles and Audi chassis balance.

Having owned many heavily modified cars, there’s a certain appeal to something relatively factory. And then tweaking it hehe

Gents, could anyone recommend an E39 specialist in Manchester/The NW.

My 523i Touring is running a little lumpy around 1.5K revs.

Thanks
I was very happy with Darren Wood in Stockport when I had my E46 and E91 smile
Thank you. I'll give them a call.

Yeah, I had a quick look at Golf R prices and then RS3s and £15k seemed to be the bottom of the Golf R prices and way below the RS3s I saw, so it seemed good value to me. But it didn't look like it received bids/ sold so maybe the market still sees it as overpriced. I am not sure it's far off 'good value' though. I am weirdly tempted despite never having owned a VAG product in my life. That's some engine!

I actually wasn't looking for an R/RS3, as the other links might suggest; I always keep an eye out for an interesting engine swap!
