That is sitting low Loon, but in a good way.
At Excel Classic and Sports car show last week they had a Box 986 S with 16,000 miles on the clock for £16.5k, initially I thought that is expensive but I suppose that so long as that lower mileage doesn't create it's own issues (dried out seals / bearings etc.) then it's probably a lot of car for the cash so long as you use it as intended, they are not collectors cars (yet).

Mine really was one of the best all round cars I have had (kept it for a good few years). Really rather miss it tbh.At Excel Classic and Sports car show last week they had a Box 986 S with 16,000 miles on the clock for £16.5k, initially I thought that is expensive but I suppose that so long as that lower mileage doesn't create it's own issues (dried out seals / bearings etc.) then it's probably a lot of car for the cash so long as you use it as intended, they are not collectors cars (yet).

Maybe it's just my old mind playing tricks on me...My best mate had a 280 wedge for a couple of years back in the late 80's (he was only 20, so god knows how much insurance was)... Only a Ford 6cyl, and a slush box, but it was red, made an incredible noise, and it was a complete chick magnet. Fabulous memories

If that's the less risky engine then the alternative must be equivalent to Russian roulette.ATM said:

Are they risky?
My wife had a 6er coupe as a company car c.10 years ago... it was only the 3l, but utterly reliable.
Put it this way, I did quite a bit of homework and I regret getting a 745i within 3 months of owning it, as good as it is.My wife had a 6er coupe as a company car c.10 years ago... it was only the 3l, but utterly reliable.
Potential for oil leaks is ridiculous and in all sorts of unexpected places, rarely a cheap fix.
Valvetronic intermediate levers wear causing misfires on cold starts.
Valve stem oil seals go.
Coolant pipe in the V leaks.
The trouble is that everything is a few hundred quid at a minimum to fix. On an M engine it'd be irritating, on a mainstream BMW engine it's a bloody farce.

Old cars = trouble. Who knew?
There's varying degrees of 'acceptable' bork for the return you get though.Get a 730i and you've reduced your headaches exponentially while not really missing out on much.

My 996 has 168k on it now, and although it can be a little lumpy at low revs when it's cold, it absolutely flies along when it's got some revs on the dial... owner of my Indy said 'she still goes well!!' last time it was in for work.
When I was assessing the quality of the home brewed engine rebuild on mine thats what I was told to check. Low revs is where you notice hesitations and irregular rhythms. Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
