Evening all - great posting over the last few weeks!! I’ve joined the vanlife brigade with this replacing my F31 tourer, predominantly for bike lugging duty:
Given this has a heady 102bhp I’m thinking about a stablemate - would love another Caterham (given special 911s are financially restricted), but what is the concencus on a BBR turbo’d mk3 MX5? The odd one comes up for sale, and given their low cost (and the Evo videos off them on track) they seem like a thinking man’s Caterham? 300bhp, good chassis and balance, plus you can stay dry!

That VW 'van' is fantastic G, more pics please? Is it converted inside at all?? Would like something like this and do a solo road trip.
Oh and Caterham is the answer
Cheers Ben! I’ll get some more pics taken soon. It’s converted to a day van, so has a Caravelle floor with rails, 3 seat rock and roll bed in the back, with captain’s driver seat and 2 seat passenger side. Carpeted and lights etc in the back plus tailgate conversion and windows. It was a friend of mine’s work van - he’s a car painter by trade, hence the one off Scirroco colour change (I think it’s called dark oak).Oh and Caterham is the answer
I think I know you’re right on the Caterham, but I end up looking at cars around £30k - I could get an MX for closer to £12k.

I really like it, right upy strasse that one. Look forward to seeing more pics.
One of those, my mtb and an empty diary is
£12k and hassle free fun then MX5 is hard to beat imo
Not sure what style of riding you like, but if you’ve got Netflix check out Deathgrip the movie - in particular the section with Brendan Fairclough and Josh Bryceland riding Schladming 👍🏻👍🏻One of those, my mtb and an empty diary is

What's to say which version of the period car should be reflected at Goodwood?
How about where two versions of the same car exist, one of which has been recently built from scratch as a facsimile (where they “share” a chassis number, and the paying public is never told of the new car’s existence)? An example could be the Mk2 Escort. At the extreme end let's say a WRC winning Mk2 Escort was badly crashed in the past 20 years and 'reshelled' - I'm sorry but for me that means the original car is dead and there's a new recreation in its place. That should be a matter of record and the car should not be masqueraded as the original car. It would be a replica with lots of works parts, but not the original car.
The Revival should be the same. New cars with nothing old but a VIN plate should be on the record as different from the real old race cars. The punters ought to be told if a brand new £300k lightweight E-type replica is lapping the £1m real thing. If there are no old race cars left, let's be honest about watching replicas!

Yes indeed. The best modern ones are R53s in my view, although the R56 isn't bad (I find the current model abhorrent to look at as well as un-mini like in size). Handle like the proverbial housefly and I love the meaty steering and the "eminently brappable"* (as per deR's Dunk 76 almanac of Evoisms) nature- clearly designed by folk who like driving enthusiastically. Yet they are habit able day to day. I don't go in for mildly pastiche styling but these get away with it due to being nicely put together and just great fun to pedal briskly. Like all good driver's cars, they reward driving with sporting intent
[*] Notice I didn't say biddable
Been keeping on eye on these for ages, thinking that when they dip below £10k I'd take a more serious look. But they never have. Don't seem to have moved in price for ages.[*] Notice I didn't say biddable
For me, the R56 is too much (in your face, too many stickers etc), the R53 more subtle (which I like).

Next year turn up to the revival with a ticket which looks like an original one but isn't..........
Fair points well made by you and braddo I think.
That SCR does look vaguely CGI but that's the colour and lights plus comedy wheels I think. I still like it. A 7 figure windfall would include this and a Singer as well as more modest acquisitions (like a garage to put them in....).
GP - Nice van.
bungle - I agree, the R53 WGP is the daddy. I'd not shun an R56 but the R53 is more desirable imho. Likely to end up with a modded MCS / JCW as rear seats seem to be a requirement sadly. We'll see. Alternatively I'd like her to get an Elise so I can have an estate for lugging, but two cars might be pushing it!

You also get more speakers in a JCW - I actually thought my stereo had an issue before realising Bertone had ditched the rears! Supercharger whine makes up for it thoughI'm not going to get involved on the Revival et al subject.

Always really liked these, and £15k seems ridiculously cheap... no evidence to support this, but I would fear massive bills when something inevitably went pop. Edit... very quick Google/PH Maserati section trawl reveals plenty of evidence... £2-3k/year in general upkeep, 10mpg round town, 17 or so average
Still want one
