Talking of which my Integrale has a noisy diff. The local man thinks crown wheel and pinion (?) may be worn. Is that likely to be a big bill? I’m assuming so...

Crown wheel and pinion for my 996 needed replacing and the cost of these only from Porsche is around £2k so I've gone for a 2nd hand box. Complete box from Porsche is £10k brand new.
3d gear on the GT3 was sometimes baulky, especially when cold. Opened the box - worn 3d/4th shift sleeve, worn 3d/4th shift fork, worn driver and a new 3d/4th shift rod. All in about £550 in parts, which I found reasonable. Luckily, 3d gear was intact - my box was modified by Manthey with a 993 GT2 3d gear set, which has gone from EUR750 to EUR2500 in the space of 5yrs. The steel motorsport synchros that were also fitted at the time went from EUR300 each to EUR1000 each - a function of the 996Cup cars becoming eligible for historic racing and Porsche realising that if your 993 GT2 is worth nigh on EUR1mm, then paying EUR2.5k for a gear set is piddle change...The GT3 on the whole has been pretty good to run over the last 4 years, but it is an absolute myth that they are bombproof and utterly reliable, and that everything else is bound to disintegrate at the mere sight of a race track and kerbs. The GT3 calls for preventative maintenance - my car had 25k miles when acquired, now it is on 38k miles. 4 wheel bearings, Pagid RS29 front pads, 2 drive shafts, 2 rear coffin arms, 2 rear toe arms, the above gearbox issue and obviously 4 engine and transaxle oil changes. We also changed the RMS as it was weeping a touch, but that was a function of the low mileage - Mezgers need to be driven to seal properly due to dry sump design. Ok, I run Motorsport arms with solid bushes, but you see the pattern overall. Luckily I bought her with the all the usual stuff like condensers/radiators done. I also have mess grills, so unlikely to suffer further issues.
An E46 M3 prepped to a similar level with be almost equal fun and miles cheaper to run. No wonder there are tons of them at the Ring and UK trackdays.

The appreciation in value of the GT3 will more than offset the running cost delta vs E46 M3.
Don't get me wrong - in terms of absolute return - this has been the best trade of my career, and that's what I do for a living...However, I am not sure that if you buy a GT3 now, you would be in the same position, while £30k will get you an E46 M3 that will run rings around most 996 and 997 GT cars. Hell, £35k buys you a Corvette Z06 before bargaining, which is monumentally fast and fun...

Hang on, are you suggesting a Z06 is a better buy than some Pork?
Depends what you want to do... But in general - yes...
I have spent a lot of time behind the wheel of both - at £35k the GT3 edges it with the unconventional engine position and resultant handling characteristics, and steering feel. Both interiors are horrendous
At £35k for the Z06 and £70k for the GT3, the Z06 is superb value for money...
- The LS7 is a power plant to die for - 7ltrs of dry-sumped goodness spinning to 7000rpm
- The Tremec box can withstand abuse and is nice to shift
- Brembos are easily on par with the GT3's
- Pfadt do a fabulous suspension kit, which costs about the same as a set of Manthey KW V3s
On track, no GT3, including a 997.2 RS will see which way a C6 Z06 will go and the C6 Z06 is surprisingly capable cruiser due to insanely long 6th gear and plenty of luggage space/comfortable seats...
If it wasn't for my fear of missing out on the gravy train that old and sought after 911s tend to turn into, I would have been selling the GT3 to buy a 996 GT2 clone race car and a C6 Z06
P.S. Yes, I have been offered a GT2-ed 996TT based race car build by RDM Racing of Germany for EUR35k...

I think if I ever bought a 996TT it would be to GT2 it. Proper man's car that. But in general - yes...

I think by now people know how to code out the sPASM stting itself when it realises that 4wd is no longer there... The race car I mentioned has no ABS because of the former, but I am sure now people have developed solutions...anonymous said:

The C6 Z06 is very different from the boggo C6, but all in I would agree with your sentiment.Funny how certain cars don't "translate" well in the UK...
Take a Z4MC - an absolute beauty of a car in my mind, but was universally slated in the UK press for a fidgety ride on the less than perfect UK roads. Mine did most of its 35k miles in Europe where it felt sublime, but in the UK I did agree with the press that it left something to be desired in the damping department.
The Z06 - perfect on the Pacific Coast Highway and up into the Redwood National Forest, but a little bit too big for the roads of N Wales, where the narrow 996GT3 is absolutely sublime...
Must say though, that at double the money it has to be sublime... :P

Different tyres front and rears on the car - what a joke! I would accept that on a 2k stter but not on a performance car with interesting handling... Also - as a reference point - I sold my 2006 car in 2012 for £11.5k -50k miles, FBMWSH, Porsche brakes front and rear with brand new front discs, 11.5k till the next oil service... What an idiot I... YF06HLP I still miss you and I would gladly have you back...
