I'm not bothered. I won't be driving it!

Landcruiser/Amazon any good?
We have two horses, our Land Cruiser does all of the farm duties and pulls the horse trailer with ease.

We have the 4.2 diesel
Which body is that in? Is it reliable?

Td6 / 3.0 TDV6?
Td6 RRs are awful. 2.7 TDV6 D3 is OK, but slow.

At the other end of the spectrum, what's the weapon of choice for horsebox towing?

£15k budget (you don't have to spend all of it). 2,500 kg towing capacity. Economical, if possible. Reliable, essential.

Consider anything from Defenders to Shoguns but have precious little knowledge of any of them.
£5k of X53 X5 3.0d will do all that, and not be horrible when you don't have a horse box attached.

Which engines should I look in to then? Horror stories around the 2.7 V6, 3.0 seems better.

We could be selling our Touareg to get a 7 seater (Q7 most likely).
I presume they can tow stuff?

Thought of that had crossed my mind but the person who would be using it isn't keen on BMW and I'm not sure how robust they are?

Mine towed a couple of tons of trailer and race car around happily for 20k miles without drama. Better than the E70 that replaced it IMO.

2.7 isn’t problematic in my experience, the 3.0 variants are definitely better though, esp. with the 8 speed. Late ones still randomly snapping cranks seems to be a thing though.

OK, so in order of like a car to like a tractor, I have a list:

E53 X5
Range Rover L322
Disco 3/4
Land Cruiser
Defender

Add a Touareg as well. Proper locking diff but also civilised place to sit.

First generation Cayenne? I know the V8 has a few issues to look out for though

Without some sort of locking centre diff (pre-xDrive X5s etc have non-lockable clutches), I’m not sure pulling a loaded horsebox through a wet field is going to be much fun.

I love our Touareg, and it has a tow bar... but I've not been off road with it, and I don't tow anything!

The Rangie doesn't appear to have the means to attach a horse box. wink

Think both are exceptionally good designs, especially in original forms - Discovery is definitely more practical though (you can get a Mopar big block with attached Torqueflite in the back).
