Hate to sound negative re the 400, as I "get" the cool factor, but they were crap even when they were new and time has not improved them! Best enjoyed when owned by somebody else. Like Aston DB4/5/6
As much as I love a donkey I have to concur. I'd have a 400 but it is some way down the list in terms of slots on the imaginary fleet. Would I confidently get into that with friends/family and set sail for Italy or such? No, I would not. You need something mid 90s onwards to be genuinely usable IMO. That's not to say it's impossible, it's just unlikely.

Mind, I wouldn't have a QP, either.

Fair and very valid point.

Probably still possibly maybe would though.

Lovely for 95 percent of it, but the post-facelift front light setup is awful. Always has been and always will be.

Thanks! Glad you had such a good experience.

However if it was, and the car was solely for fun and there were two other cars in the household, I’d wholeheartedly go full donkey.
I kind of want to go full donkey, otherwise what's the point?

If trips over the channel were included I think i would go for a Quattroporte. They're a big car but with the engine behind the front axle they might have a nicer front end feel and balance than the AMGs.
...and the sound!

I hear you, and I hope everyone feels the same because I'd love one, one day. I think they are stunning things. The design really appeals to me.

You need to make up your mind what you require from the car as they are all quite different with the exception of the AMG estates, then buy a Turbo R anyway and keep the money you would've spent for 2/3 years maintenance.
I think the requirements are:
1. Imaginary road trips with the wife and kids. I want a car that makes me look forward to planning these trips. This means space for 2 young kids, plus boot space.
2. Has to be a bit noice
3. Has to sound amazing

From a safety point of view, i agree with you. Which if I think about it too much is reason enough. I think the noise (engine/tyre/wind) might get tiring as well.

Musings part 2:

W210 E60 AMG

I like this. A LOT. W124 E60 AMGs are $$$ now. This, with it's superior steering rack, 5 speed box is an interesting prospect. I love the M119 engine, feels like a swiss watch. I wonder if I could keep rust at bay by wrapping the car?

Back to M5s

This seems extraordinary value. Run it for 12 months under warranty and move on?

I wonder what this will sell for?:

Manual M5

These two are the same price (as is the 400):

456

612
Why is this particular car, albeit LHD, 10k cheaper than anything else. I wonder what the actual clearing level for all the RHD cars priced between 65k and 75k is. What will be the impact of all the FFs at 120k that will inevitably come down in value? It feels like at some point there will be a lot of Ferrari GTs on the market.

Waaaaaant:

FJ70 seems amazing value if accurate
Don't know how comfortable this would be as a road trip car though. Probably not very refined.

Probably gonna lose you guys from this point:

Celica GT4
Not a road trip car but I love it

This is a bit special too

CL7 Euro R

4 door R33
At 30k maaaaaybe. At 60k, not for me. Love it though.

Sub 60k mile M5 tourings

I love the insanity of this car, but I don't think it will satisfy like some of the earlier options
If you want a 5 with some poke which won't ever break and will cost you peanuts how about the unloved 550i. Had mine over 3 years and it's cost me nothing. 4.8 litre 370bhp v8 which is economical compared to the M5. I wouldn't call it special but the engine is great. I treat mine worse than my x girlfriend and it never cheats on me. You can find manuals but these are rare cars already and most are slushers. Mine is the most rare being 55 reg so cheap tax and an estate. It's not blistering fast but can easily annoy a Maserati Quattroporte and can still be used for tip runs or buying a new dishwasher. This is my idea of an arty pic. Forget manicured grass or industrial backdrops, you just need to park next to a yellow Corvette.

Merry Christmas threadists.

My Christmas present was a replacement engine for my Alpina B10 V8 Touring; not cheap but should last another couple of decades and is an epic motorcar now its perfect again.

Musings part

... stuff...

Out of your whole lot, the two cars that make the most sense overall are the 456 and the Maserati Gran Turismo...

Dynamically, our of your lot nothing can touch the E61 M5. Not even remotely close for sheer involvement and engineering brilliance. I say that as I run one for 2.5yrs and 20k+ miles. It was supercar fast - in gear it would stay with an early Gallardo up until about 160 and then slowly walk away provided the limiter has been removed. 996/7 Turbo - provided they had not been mapped - same story. Yet, it had a number of major flaws. Firstly, if you live in the SE like I do, the car would be wasted 99% of the time. Sitting on a busy M25/A3 commute on my way to Portsmouth with a F1 derived V10 begging to be thrashed was not my idea of fun. Going to NWales or the Ring was a different matter, but it would only happen two-three times a year. The rest of the time, I spent driving this masterpiece, £2.5k annual running costs before it has even turned a wheel, wishing I was in a 535d. Did I mention the 17mpg average and the laughably small range?

Don’t get me wrong - it is a special car, definitely the best to take to Europe/Alps on a driving holiday. The V10 - short of a Carrera GT one is definitely the best unit ever shoehorned in a production car’s engine bay. But the anonymity would get to you. By its very nature is not a car you think about when you dream of grabbing the keys and going for a blat on a Sunday morning. Despite being the last hurrah of BMW’s ///M Division analogue department. The latter sounds ridiculous, but the rack is hydraulic, the LSD is plates/viscous, the gearbox is kind of Manual and also, above all, the engine is NA.

The AMG is almost there, but not quite...

Hence, take the Monica Belucci - old school, questionable past, high maintenance, but also thrilling most of the time. Maserati Grand Turismo or 456 for me, please...

And Merry Christmas to the rest of the thread!
