Anyone ever done similar? Mrs wasn't impressed at the suggestion, mind, but she has little or no interest in cars or investments.
I bought both my kids "cheap" plates when they were years away from learning to drive. They are both in their late 20s now and the plates still adorn their cars. I see nothing wrong with what you are thinking of. If she doesn't like the plate when she grows up - not much loss to you.
Yep we purchased plates for both our son's when they were about 9/10 funnily enough one is called CJ so he's got "17 CJ" which we gave him on his 17th birthday.... Great investments for them if they did ever want to sell which i doubt.....!

Were they expensive at the time? I imagine they're worth a bit now.

I'm a bit 50/50 about it all, as I don't know if the 'new style' plates will ever be as valuable as dateless ones, and the landscape for private plates and car ownership (especially with the next generation) could be significantly different in 15-20 years time.

there are a few '## CJ' plates listed on regtransfers for £15k+, so I guess it would depend on the significance of the numerals.

As soon as we decided on the name for our baby I bought the plate that spelt the name correctly - this was even before she was born

The way I view it is that even if she doesn’t like it or want to use it, I can as it’s also an alternative version of my middle name.

I paid about £599 from the DVLA for it and as it happens a celebrity named their child the same shortly after ours so the popularity is increasing smile

My daughter has a relatively uncommon 7-letter name (but based on a real name spelt correctly that has mythological origins), and it's one that people tend to say "ooh that's pretty" at.
(just to clarify it isn't uncommon due to being trashy or badly spelt like "Elyzabeff" or "Champagne-Mercedes").

I've seen a new-style plate that is pretty much her name spelt out, from the DVLA, for under £500. It's bugging me whether I should invest in it for her (she's not even 2 yet, mind) on the gamble that other girls might end up with that same name and number plates will be of value in another 15 years or so.

Anyone ever done similar? Mrs wasn't impressed at the suggestion, mind, but she has little or no interest in cars or investments.
I have just got my son (just turned 6 months) his first plate a few months ago. Was watching it on the dvla site before he was born. I thought if i don't buy it now it will sell and i will always regret it.

He was born on May 26th and called Max so got M26 MAX for him. Just put it on the Mrs new car.

I bought one at the DVLA auction last week for my daughter, who’s 9. I bought an 11 plate for my son when they were released. He was 3 at the time.

That's not necessarily Reg Transfers - you list your own price when you sell through them

I 'think' they bought the plate after the previous owner died a few years ago. Possibly was a night club owner?

I bet the THAI embassy would have loved to have had it on one of their cars.
AFAIK it is a Thai Embassy car, pristine Green 190E last time i saw it.
The Thai Ambassador's car shows the plate "THA11", and the embassy also has "THA12"

If they were also issued "THA1", it would have been on the ambassador's official car. I think the cherished diplomatic plates (xx 1, xxx 1 etc) are owned by the Govt and issued to the diplomatic mission so therefore I'd assume if THA1 was issued, it would have to be used on the official car but I could be wrong.

Here's Regfinder's explanation of how the numbers were distributed to Embassies and which numbers went to which Embassies, which seems to be that they did the best they could with what they could issue, re-issue, or using letters normally reserved for Northern Ireland. I think THA 1 was an ordinary private issue that couldn't be recovered.
