Dark numberplates - New ****wittery or something else?
Discussion
Travelling about over the past couple of weeks I've spotted a few cars with dark or perhaps smoked numberplates front and rear. Always on "yoof" type cars and too many spotted to be a one off or some fault with an otherwise acceptable plate.
These were definitely modern plates just very heavily tinted not old fashioned black and silver ones.
Net effect seemed to be to make the plate pretty much illegible. Surely though any such muppetry is a BiB magnet?
So is this the new cool thing to do for the kids, is it perhaps soemthing to do with Pokemon hunting maybe or just general chavvy idiocy?

I think that's correct, there was a trend of having these plates that are supposed to be camera-proof. They appeared on one of the Traffic Cops shows quite early on, where they showed that hitting the "inverse colour" button on the digital image makes them as easy to read as a standard plate, as long as anyone is looking at the images from the camera.

There's a 1 series in my area, black paint work, black alloys, blacked out windows and for a time it had heavily smoked number plates which made it difficult to read. These were definitely modern plates just very heavily tinted not old fashioned black and silver ones.

A short time ago I noticed they had been replaced with correct legal ones, I can only assume the local police had a few words and issued a ticket!
To qualify for the right to use a heavily smoked / tinted number plate you must first fulfil the following criteria.
Beard. You must have a lovely beard.
Backwards Baseball cap with the hood on your hoodie loosely pulled up over it.
Gym. You must visit the gym and have `goals'
BAE. You need a BAE.
`Rare' wheels and ultra lows with wheels that are `Fitted'
Other friends who conform to the above and have similar number plates so you can park next to each other and take photos of both cars together.
An instagram account is imperative in order to share all of your photos depicting all points highlighted above.

I have my rear plate tinted. Its just window tinting film over a standard plate.
In bright sunshine, it's hard to tell without being side-by-side with a 'normal' car, but is pretty obvious in overcast and night-time conditions. I cannot forsee it being a problem for cameras to pick up; i'd argue no worse than a film of dirt as you often see on scruffy cars.
So what makes it f**kwittery, exactly? If you visited another country where either small, or different coloured numberplates, or even a lack of numberplate entirely are different to what you are used to (but neverthless mandatory in that country or state), does that make them f**kwits too? And therefore, is the real problem that doing anything illegal make you a f**kwit?
In that case, surely this is all subjective; it depends on your social and ethical barometer. I for example, don't care about others speeding around me as long it's safe. Double the speed limit? Couldn't care less, as long as it's 'appropriate'. Drop a piece of litter? Pretty insignicant in the scheme of things, but i consider it abhorrent behaviour punishable by death.
I wish no harm with my tinted plate. I just think it looks kinda cool. I'm not trying to fool anyone, get out of speeding fines or rob a bank. I'm not a bad guy; i just want my car to look nice in my humble eyes.

Do you think the number plate on the car on the left is as easy to be read by a camera as the other two vehicles?BlackST said:
Seen a black Audi R8 yesterday by York Castle Museum with smoked plates.
Have never seen them before. I guess they are just cosmetic to add to the blacked out look.
a quick look into it and its just a basic tint film applied to the plateHave never seen them before. I guess they are just cosmetic to add to the blacked out look.
possibly legal if its not overly dark and obscuring the plate

Watched one of those police, action tv things a while back. One of the crews saw a car where they could read the number plate with their eyes, but the on-board cameras couldn't make out the digits. Interesting, but they didn't say what the issue was or how it was done. Resulted, as expected, in a 'pull'.
