You and others here COMPLETELY miss the point of this car
It's a road legal track biased car. Something VW have never produced before.
Renault produced the Megane R26R a number of years back and me and a few friend all bought one each and had the best time of our track day life in them. A road biased car would not have worked.
150 deposits prove there is a need for such a car. I for one cannot wait for mine to arrive. If I need 5 seats I'll take another car, if I need a convertible I'll do the same etc etc
What I mean is that you could buy a Lotus Elise for similar money...and not the base model, either! If I had £30k+ to spend on a track car, it wouldn't be a Volkswagen Golf of any description! It's a road legal track biased car. Something VW have never produced before.

VW could stick their badge on a Hyundai and the usual sheep would still be queuing around the block for them.

Fair enough but most people only have enough money to buy themselves one car. A Lotus Elise isn't much fun when you doing the shopping, or going on holiday with the luggage, or even commuting to work through town.VW could stick their badge on a Hyundai and the usual sheep would still be queuing around the block for them.
I don't need 4 seats, I do need luggage space and while I love a fun car it does need to have some practicality. Also I'm a VW enthusiast, so while I'd love a Lotus I'd need an VW and a Lotus.
Without a doubt this is a car for the VW enthusiast and not a volume car. That's why they are only making 400 of them. It's a shame some say there is no point and decry brands from trying different things. Personally I love it when manufacturers do these fun versions of their normal cars, and if they didn't we would never have had GTI and from that XR2I, RS, Type R and all the other hot hatches we love so much today.
The last comment you make is a bit odd, people buy VW's because they don't stick their badge on a Hyundai, or Mazda or Honda or Ford. I'm not quite sure where you are going with that one. When you buy any VW it is designed and made by VW.

I haven't bought a VW for........well I can't remember when (though I have had a MK1 GTI for 23 years) But this car hits the spot and has drawn me into their showroom. So VW got this right. Great publicity, great product

I was fortunate to read about the release in the press ages ago and called my local VW dealership who were anything but helpful. Not being put off by them I tried my next local dealership and they were much more helpful. I have recently had confirmation of my order and have picked white and kept the AC. I plan to use my car in decent weather and start doing some track days to gain more experience. I am not expecting the value to rise, I agree the residuals should be high and hopefully if I pass it over to my son in 20 years or so with low mileage he will have a super rare car and can either sell it or appreciate it like I plan to do so.

Yes it was a good read & it beat the jounos favourite the Focus RS (as it should have done) but the Megane Trophy still edged it.
What about M135i? Was it part of the test?It was Leon Cupra 290 vs Civic Type R vs Focus RS vs Clubsport S
