I have what I am sure is a silly question- why would you get this over a Golf R which on paper is faster, has 4 wheel drive and is also a Golf for I guess similar money?

I appreciate that many will wonder why I ask but this seems on paper to be a brisk front drive hatch.
I went to VW with the intention of buying the Club Sport (not the S model mentioned in this article) and the there was zero discount offered, as such I came out with a deal on a Golf R for a little over £27k with DSG, met paint and NAV.

This 'S' model is ultimately more desirable due to limited numbers and should have stronger residuals but starting with a £7k price variation they need to be exceptional.

Well....I've got an Clubsport S coming as well as a std Clubsport and I'm not really sure why some of you are honking so much.

Nobody had to be given the "nod and the wink" for their favourite dealer

I walked into my dealer about 6 weeks ago having never bought from them or even met them before.

Placed an order, job done. ANY of you could have done the same.

Both? Wow, I'm both impressed but also a little puzzled... Surely there can't be that much difference to warrant two cars only slightly different?

(Not a troll type post, genuinely intrigued)

Because I needed a 4 seater for daily duties but really fancy the S for maybe a year down the line when I don't need the seats

Something that doesn't make sense - claimed 0-62 for both manual and DSG versions of the Clubsport is 6.3s yet the Golf R is quoted as 5.1s Manual / 4.9s DSG. Actually, many testers have found it even faster to sixty.

Yes, the Clubsport is down a bit on horsepower but it is quite a bit lighter too. Does the AWD Haldex vs regular FWD really make that much of a difference? On a dry track I can't see how it boosts the 0-62 by over a second. Maybe the gearing is different?

Launch control on the Haldex system is savage, especially with duel clutch

Yeah, I know - I've got one wink

Seems strange that it makes so much difference over plain FWD on a dry, grippy surface though. My old 200bhp FWD TT with S-Tronic was no slouch on dry launches especially as it was relatively light (about 1350kg IIRC).

In the wet, I could totally believe it. You can get the power down so easily, you have to be careful to remember that the car won't stop or manoeuvre any better just because there is so much traction when it comes to accelerating.

Just out of interest how close would the R & the Clubsport have to have been on price for you to pick the Clubsport.

Nice is that an optional extra I haven't read about or is it a pointless statement that has nothing to do this thread. frown

GTI is a very significant car in terms of motoring history. As you're all aware it revolutionised the family hatchback into a supercar slayer back in the day. With only 150 RHD cars being made and trick construction, stiffer lighter shell etc these little cars will trade for eye watering amounts as I believe they will be added to important collections all over the world.

At £34,000 VW has massively underpriced them. Not in terms of this obviously being relatively expensive for a hatch back but when you think uber exclusivity, GTI heritage and lap record at N collectors won't bat an eyelid to pay £70k for one in the used market it to stick it next to their other more exotic collectables for what they will regard as pocket change.

Watching Sport Auto test one and replicate a time to the lap record at N for a fwd hatch back third and fourth gears look faster than Porsche GT3! Its like the vids been speeded up!

Seems crazy to say it but this car is far more exclusive than a 991 RS in some ways. Obviously irrelevant as 991 very special and not comparable but build numbers matter to certain collectors. I do hope we see more than a few pounding round tracks and being used for hill climbs etc. Very easy to get a reliable 400bhp + from these little force fed motors!

With a bit of warmth in the tyres and on a dry piece of tarmac, the Clubsport S will almost certainly dip into the 5s to 62 - in fact one has, according to Fastest Laps, already been recorded at 5.6 seconds to 100kph.

FWD won't help as the weight will shift backwards under a starting start, I would imagine that a 40-100mph run would be a lot closer.

Now the second VW I find interesting since the Phaeton.

Being no lover of VW, I highly regard this from what I've read, Well done for breaking the mold.

And regarding the 0-60, I guess the FRS takes a second off the time compared to the CTR so it wouldn't be unreasonable to presume 4WD could account for a second quicker in this scenario.
