I used to have a 1.8T Anni but now have an R32 so technically can't go frown, but I have persuaded a friend to come along with his tweaked mk1 campaign with me as passenger smile I'm looking forward to it, I bet it will be a cracking day.

Must mention this to my father, although it's a bit of a trek over on the ferry from Ireland. I suspect at 80 he would be in with a shout as the oldest GTi owner though (Mk5 DSG 3-dr)

As an aside, do these count? Wonder if anyone will bring one:

Over 16s only as well? Seems remarkably restrictive.

My first ever car was a Mk1 GTi 1.8 and my second was a Mk2 big bumper 16v! Loved them both immensely.

I'm afraid so - this was sadly dictated by Volkswagen's facilities team. I was planning on bringing my daughter too as Mrs. JD was due a weekend off...

Celebrate 40 years of a truly iconic vehicle, but only if you have one, else wise, fk off.
So at an event celebrating the 'Golf Gti' with restricted attendance for owners of said car why would you see it otherwise?

They don't want all sorts of riff raff turning up with their ricer jap cars - that's what McDonalds car parks are for

I suppose there is a very real danger of such an event being totally inundated with thousands of visitors if it was thrown open to all and everyone – even VW HQ only has so much parking space and facilities ... 150 keeps it manageable .. very sensible :-)

I had the good fortune to test drive one the first GTIs the UK, in 1975 I think. It was LHD demo model kitted out with electric sunroof, rare in those days. My pal's Dad had the local VW franchise hence managed to get one sent over from Germany in advance of RHD production. I can tell you it was a revelation in terms of agility, refinement, style, build quality and fun. A real game changer.

Gutted Rs aren't allowed in, any chance that might change if the event doesn't fill up?

Not being (too) pedantic but had you also tried a Sud 1.5Ti? If anything, it was a better drive but few people never sampled it.

No, I'm afraid not. It is definitely, absolutely, strictly 100% Golf GTIs only!

True. Or a 205GTI of course.

Yep, but not off the top of my head! However, full joining instructions along with your ticket will be emailed out a few days before the event.
