Must mention this to my father, although it's a bit of a trek over on the ferry from Ireland. I suspect at 80 he would be in with a shout as the oldest GTi owner though (Mk5 DSG 3-dr)

As an aside, do these count? Wonder if anyone will bring one:

Them's the wheels fitted to my Mk2 8v, if that counts..?

My first ride in a Golf GTI was (IIRC) in 1981, from Peterhead down to Aberdeen, five up with all our offshore gear too, I couldn't believe how quick it was with all that weight in it... Happy memory biggrin

Sounds like a good event pity I'm away on holiday.

Started at the lowest point with a Mk4 2.0 allegedly a Gti.
Then had a Mk2 8v Gti but not a great one.
Sold for something a bit more practical, Mk3 Gti 16v in dragon green with air con. Great car.
Came back to Gti's with a really good Mk5.

I had the good fortune to test drive one the first GTIs the UK, in 1975 I think. It was LHD demo model kitted out with electric sunroof, rare in those days. My pal's Dad had the local VW franchise hence managed to get one sent over from Germany in advance of RHD production. I can tell you it was a revelation in terms of agility, refinement, style, build quality and fun. A real game changer.
Not being (too) pedantic but had you also tried a Sud 1.5Ti? If anything, it was a better drive but few people ever sampled it.
True. Or a 205GTI of course.
Interesting point. Alfasud's were not on my radar until a few years later though the early smaller engine variants may have been around in 1975. I never drove one but my then GF's Dad, who knew his cars, had a Sprint 1.5 in 1979. I never drove it but I understand it was more than a decent drive. He would have been put off a Golf GTI because they had developed a bit of a yuppie image by then.

205GTI would have been much later but again a class leader.

All I could compare the 1975 GTI experience to, at the time, was an Escort Mexico or an Allegro 1750SS. The Allegro was dire. My Mum had a Dolomite Sprint in 1975 but that's not a fair comparison IMO.

Do you have to arrive bang on 9am? Or is it okay to turn up a bit later? It's nearly a 4 hour journey for me so could be a bit delayed!

Ideally we would like everyone to arrive at or as close to 09:00am as possible, but a 4 hour drive is one of the better excuses for being slightly late. Can't promise there will be much bacon left though hehe

Super rare nowadays. I had a Polo G40 and used to take it to a specialist quite a lot, and you'd see far more Polos there than Golfs. Still miss the sound of a G-Lader charger...

Probably the coolest Golf ever made in my opinion!

A quick Wikipedia just jogged my memory a bit, and the Golf Rallye was even cooler, and the Golf Limited the coolest. Was the Golf G60 ever officially called the GTI G60 as per the picture?

Love the Limited - only car they made with a 16v G-lader I believe! Proper Q-car appeal too cool

I always thought it was officially a "GTi G60", as it came in a GTi body. And I could be wrong, but I think they came both with FWD and with Syncro 4WD? There was a FWD one for sale a couple of years ago at 4 Star for £10k, and seemed to take a while to shift

Be a bit of a hike from Teesside. Can't really leave a 3 month old at home, so can we bring 2 + a midget?

To my knowledge it is strictly over 16s on site, (due to their PL insurance I think). Sorry!

The G60s have the taller Passat / Corrado tunnel, just as the Rallye does. So they're not mainstream FWD 8v / 16v shells with mods for the raised boot floor for the fuel tank.

Even the non-syncro FWD G60s have the bigger tunnel. This cropped up a few years back in the Mk2 Golf GTI Championship where we were writing tight regulations and caught that one before any sharp practice started, of using what might have been perceived as stiffer shells!

The Limiteds use a 5-door syncro-type shell obviously.

Would this Limited be allowed to go to the event or is a G60 16v not classed as a GTi?

Looks like a good event that I would have gone to if I still had mine!

Good selection of Golfs signed up so far - except for mk3s. I know they aren't that well regarded for being quite flabby compared to the mk2, but they are quickly becoming the forgotten GTI!

G60 Mk2s also have bonded in windscreens to.

Certainly one of the UK Limiteds is not V5 logbooked as a GTI.

Indeed. As it's not the shell, I omitted to mention, but again we banned those too in case it gained any structural advantage, mad as it sounds.
