Driven lots of cars. I'd suggest something RWD and 2 seats if you can. Z4, 350Z, Boxster, MR2 Turbo etc etc... Not chav cars on the whole either so insurance may be better than you expect.

If you really need 4 seats get an RX8 and put the rest in the bank as a bork fund.

I'm 21 and due to be getting a e46 330i touring manual dropped off at mine with a years mot for £600. Insurance is sub £800, good postcode however. Managed to get a 320ci, Range Rover, 730i and a modified cherry turbo all insured for sub £1k at 19-21 age range.

I bought a 400hp Jag S Type at 20yo.
No reason why you shouldn't do the same.
Insurance was buttons too (considering performance on offer). £800 IIRC

350Z's can be had for under £5k.

Does it have to be a hatchback?

Saloons, coupes, estates, SUVs, pickup trucks... There are loads of options with a 5 grand budget

Perhaps something other 20 y.o. Do not drive?

Renault (Rs), VXR etc will be ridiculous on the insurance (as my VXR was!)

Perhaps a large engined Jaguar? Or something else along those lines.

No mention of the need for a boot? Then a Suzuki Swift Sport should fit the bill. I've only tried a cooking version, but it seemed quite pleasant to drive so with the extra power the Sport should be fun as well smile

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, taken all in to consideration and have been getting insurance quotes as I've been going along.. All around 2-2500 for the year which isn't to bad!
that's pretty st tbh. if it was me at that age I'd just buy something more insurance friendly like a clio GT, fiesta zetec s, or twingo RS. That's £2000-2500 of insurance money you are never going to see back.

Me too. I paid around 1200 on a hot hatch at 21 and actually it was fun, but really a waste of money. The fun could have been had with something less grunt. You will never believe it when you're that age though.
