Is filling up with a jerrycan at a petrol station ok?
Discussion
For nearly 30 years working for 3 different companies & always issued with a company car I fiddled at least 2 gallons a month & sometimes 4 gallons by filling up a proper approved spare can(s) & using contents for my own & wife's cars. Was never challenged.
Darned fiddle came to an end when for the last year of my employ before retiring early got lumbered with a nasty diesel, my own/wife's cars always being petrol.

Our local Shell station got very arsey when we last filled up 3x20L jerry cans on the way to a stage rally (rally car on the trailer behind us), and told we'd not be served the next time. We've filled up at the same place for almost every event in the last 10 years without an eyelid being batted.

Sainsbury's were so hot on it, they couldn't even see the fuel can and they stopped the pump and came out to see what I was doing. Had a 20 litre plastic fuel can I picked up at a tractor spares shop. Now use that for waste engine oil and stick to 5 litre plastic fuel cans.
Which is exactly what they should be doing, otherwise you could be filling anything - & people will try all sorts, even milk bottles. The maximum penalty for allowing unapproved containers or underage use used to be £10k, no idea if that's changed though. Ozzie Osmond said:

Are they now fitted to cars by employers who don't trust their sales staff to skive & take unauthorised time off?
Luckily I early retired just as my employer was fitting the darn things to all the sales force cars which would have meant no more Fridays off to play golf or an afternoon on the beach or in the cinema.

Off topic but.. Does diesel stored in a Jerry can have a shelf life? EG will it be ok after year say?
As with any fuel it has a shelf life. With diesel there is also the possibility of some bug contaminating it over time. Can't remember what the bug is called though.Driving a 2 stroke car without an auto mixer, every fuel stop for me involves getting the 10L jerry can out the boot, sticking some fuel in it, sticking some oil in it, sloshing it around a bit. Then opening the bonnet (where the tank is located) and filling up. Repeat where necessary when more fuel is needed.
Never had an issue at any of the stations I've been to.
