Seems pricey, but is definitely lovely, interesting, classic, retro and barge.

That's pretty strong money. My near-neighbours ran a yellow 1981 280TE for many years, but then moved onto a 1994 S124 estate in two-tone light-over-dark blue, very similar to the colour scheme on my CX. They still have the S124 as their daily driver.http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C897491
I love a big engine. I also have a fondness for a column gear change.
These are a touch too much for this thread but I really like these two and they are both really good value?
(Editted to add: way too expensive, sorry, but it's taken a while to write and so I'll leave it for now and don flame suit. Besides, some out there may be in the market for a Chevrolet SS!)

How about a Maserati quattroporte? 2.8 V6 engine and a sumptuous interior. Very reasonable price at £6k?

I like the photo under the car. The chassis isn't in focus but the stones are, as if to say "Look, no oil leaks!"http://www.mandmautomotive.co.uk/used-car/maserati...

The Chevelle looks good. Although I don’t think it’s a proper genuine SS. You’d struggle to buy and import something similar from the US for the money. These are a touch too much for this thread but I really like these two and they are both really good value?

Maybe it's just the rarity, but I think these look fantastic.

The height of loveliness for me: e28, 528 manual, nice colour, leather. https://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/1986-D-BMW-528i-E28-2-8i-...

They look positively svelte these days.
Amen to you both. That is chuffing lovely. Trouble is I'd be tempted to pamper it due to having a conscience about such things and also being worried about using a >30 year old bimmer as a DD. Thing is, unless you're a collector with lots of storage space and alternative transportation, or have an especially well-cultivated weakness / nostalgia for that specific item, it seems a bit of a waste / extravagance as a weekend car.
I am clearly a soft southerner and part-time heretic etc.

See, I think that is exactly the point. It is a daily driver; that's what it was designed and built as, and it still can be. Clearly it will require maintenance, and the way to provide reliable motoring with old cars is to have more than one available (ask me how I know), but stuff from the 80s and 90s especially was good then and can still be good now.
Buy it, use it, and appreciate it. Oh, and by the way, look cooler than a penguin's flip flop whilst heading to work in it. An all-round win.

See, that all depends on there being spares support from the manufacturer. With BMW, that's rarely a problem - they can supply stuff going back to the 1950s if you can wait for a batch to be produced and can pay for it. With other marques, the picture is less certain (he said, looking at his CX outside and knowing full well that Citroën take a Stalinist view of production history).Clearly it will require maintenance, and the way to provide reliable motoring with old cars is to have more than one available (ask me how I know), but stuff from the 80s and 90s especially was good then and can still be good now.....
It's a good point. A lot of old cars really don't have the spares support to be usable for high annual mileages. BMW, Mercedes and Porsche are vastly better than a lot of other makes, especially the French and Italians. I understand Audis are problematic too once they're in the 20-year plus category.
As cool as the aforementioned Penguin’s flip flop.

Could this be used daily? A little negotiation to get in budget.

On the subject of nice old e28s, I see one of Derin's old projects is up for sale:

Oh, I totally agree and I don't doubt it would do me just the frosty side of a polar bear. I have not the need of more and plenty of experience in pedalling old cars (current fleet is a brace consisting of a 32 year old AW11 and a 986 that earned suffrage this year). But I simply wouldn't want to park what I regard as such a lovely car amongst all the air-bagged, DRL-festooned plebians around my gaff. Even with 125k miles up.Clearly it will require maintenance, and the way to provide reliable motoring with old cars is to have more than one available (ask me how I know), but stuff from the 80s and 90s especially was good then and can still be good now.

To wit, I'd want (need) a driveway and/or garage as I walk / train to work
