Good choice, I highly recommend them. Don't know much about Karmann Ghia's though.

This is a useful supplementary thread.
A dangerous supplementary thread is what it is!

All sorts of big engined Mercedes (and other) loveliness comes into view.
True!....I'm not even going to start looking as my first thought was: "Decent BMW E63/64s fall into this bracket these days....hmmm...I quite like them....".

I often see a Turbo R commuting down the M40 High Wycombe to M25. By far the coolest thing in the road at those times looks enormous and looks so so cool.

No doubt low single figures MPG.
With a gentle right foot I could sometimes coax mine into mid-teens, but anything approaching proper progress would inevitably result in a dip into single figures, with the depth of the dip wholly dependent on one's level of commitment biggrin

My German granddad had a perfect, wine red one of those. Upon his death in 1979, it was so worthless in financial terms that my grandmother sold it to some anti-nuclear hippies across the way...for pennies...who,for some inexplicable reason, painted it a blue colour with household gloss paint and brushes! confused

I remember being so upset by that as it had always been promised to me. I hope that made them happy!

I think you have to be Will.I.AM or SnoopDogg or Bradd Pitt to carry that one off.

Interesting and retro, not sure it will win fans, but think an E30 tourer with the.4.4 V8 in needs to be seen at £6K

God, no. Not with a welded different and the wheels sticking out though the arches. What a waste of a good 6-speed manual 540i that was.

Anyone know much about these? This one is at the top of the price range but it's a very late example, a 4.2 rather than a 4.0, and low mileage. I like the colour too. The shape has grown on me over the years.

I ran one of these - 2004 xkr - for a couple years. They are a lot of bang for your buck and I think drop-dead gorgeous (from the front, the back is just an x-type). always a disappointment that you can't get a manual one, but the auto box is ok, nice for driving swiftly along country A-roads.

But they are expensive to run. I sold because I got married and was looking to buy a house, but the nail in the coffin was that to get it through its last MOT cost me more than 6k and nearly a month off the road (though this is probably down to a st garage more than anything). I never had any rust problems, but problems with the gearbox are not uncommon - if they make any rumbling or clunking slowing down to a stop then walk away.

Think there's also a decent buyers guide on PH somewhere, which I used when I got mine. Didn't stop those bills coming in though!

I know it may only be a .....

but it looks interesting for the money - is the 3.6 litre unit good? I have zero experience.

Same engine as the early Cayennes, thirsty but a nice V6 noise. I wanted the Superb with that engine but couldn't justify the extra fuel cost.

How are these getting on reliability wise?

I was also about to post.. XFs are coming under £10k now, and would be a worthy successor to my Skoda when the time comes, perhaps the 3.0 V6 petrol though if its any good?

Just had a quick look on auto trader at the performance stats for the CC (3.6)

296bhp
5.6 to 60
30mpg average

I think I could live with that smile

The £500/year tax really sticks in my throat though. (Yes, I know it's only £200 more than I'm paying, but still!)

I think I would be more concerned about the transmission than the engine. I don't really fancy running a VW dual clutch box past 100K miles.

The CC and (same car pre facelift) Passat CC are decent enough cars, and pretty, but I think they work better in their smaller-wheeled, softer, sprung, lighter-weight versions, much as the other versions of the Passat do. The 1.8 four pot petrol turbo is nice, and one of those with a manual box would interest me.
