You could get a hatchback conversion for the cx
My bad. I knew that the early 1970s ones weren't but assumed that the later 1980s cars were (they certainly look like they should be). The XM was?...but that doesn't really belong in this thread. smile

Nice, but disappointment podgy after the gorgeous concept though.

Spot on. I had a CX back in the day, and this is almost as striking (I actually saw one recently in Oxford).

Yes! The only real choice and my immediate thought when reading the OP, couldn't believe it took 3 pages to be added.

Because it's a great car (I had a 1.6 GTi) but not particularly good/interesting looking?

And yet set the baseline for the rest of the peugeots that were linked to earlier. Pure shape, great proportions, just perfect for what it was.

Just lacks and sort of 'wow' factor for me. I can't imagine popping out to the garage just to have a look at it for example.

True enough I suppose, especially when compared to that Citreon SM pictured above, but then the Citroen SM isn't really in the true spirit of this thread. smile

I think a 1.9 on OEM wheels still has presence. When I got one, it had been around 15 years in the making and I still had to go out and look at it sometimes just to reassure myself that I owned one! smile

By it's very nature, a hatchback with it's short wheelbase and truncated rear probably isn't going to have much of a "wow" factor but it doesn't mean that it can't be a good, pure design and/or good looking. That Citroen SM is gorgeous but it's not really a hatchback in the truest sense of the word. smile

Quite possibly the blandest car Audi have ever made & bland is their speciality.

Tha SM goes completely the opposite way for me and ends up looking 'wacky'. I'm thinking more of the kind of cars I'd have happily had a poster on my wall next to the F40/Countach as a kid. The Integrale or Clio V6 would have made the grade I think.

When I was 18 I took out a bank loan to buy a Delta LX. For me an outstandingly beautiful car.

Not quite a hatchback, may be twisting the rules here, mk1 scirocco. Unmolested.

Forgot about that, but strictly speaking that breaks the rules as it is a sports coupe version of the Alfa Sud which, despite looking like one, wasn't originally a hatchback.

Good rule, otherwise this would be a clear winner;

Have to agree with this. Looks mean and has a great NA V6 to boot.
Although a bit bias, I'd be inclined to include the MK4 R32 with this, similar enough to the original but with a flair that makes it a tad more interesting

Really? The front lower grilles look like cheap aftermarket. The rest looks fine.

So a normal GTI in that shape looks far better to me.
I'll raise your Really? with a Are you serious?

The Anniversary looks a lot better than the bland GTI.

An honourable mention, because there isn't many good looking family hatchbacks from Japan in any era.
