This; it should be kept in the man drawer along with all the other spare things, discarded electronics too precious to throw away (saving that old Samsung flip phone for when the zombie apocalypse breaks out like the rest of us eh?) playing cards, suitcase padlocks, odd batteries and big metal keys that unlock things but you can't quite remember what.

Keeping it anywhere else is just asking for trouble. Or for your wife to lift it.

Is it down the side/ back of the safe? You put it in, but missed on account of being surprised by, and looking down at your latest incident of incontinence?

Next he will be asking where the key to the safe is. Well that is obvious it's with the car key!

The only remaining conclusion is that it never made it back into the safe when you straightened it.

So;

Where did you straighten it? (Is it still there on a shelf, or behind a worksurface)
Would you have been wearing old clothes/Overalls?
What time of year was it? (Coat weather?)
What rooms are on the route?

Have you given it to a friend, in the event he can bring it if you break down.

Have you checked it is not the key to invisibility?

Is it in the pot / jar in the kitchen, near the cooker? Or is it in the other pot / drawer by the phone?

I have been through this mental process but to no avail. I cannot recall the time of year but am guessing it was 6-9 months ago. So it would have been jacket weather. I am getting my winter clothes out soon so I will check all pockets.

My daughter 'lost' her school PE kit - she'd left it at the bus stop.
I can look there if it'll help?

I've heard they have the key AND THE SECRET wink
When you find it, bear in mind that Madonna has the lock.
And I'm sure madonna told me that I have the key.

Right OP, glad we've solved it. I'll look tonight in my man drawer.

I can't believe this hasn't been asked yet and i obviously where it is?

<parental voice>

Where did you last have it?

</parental voice>
More helpfully ( possibly, if you count eliminating places where it isn't)

Bottom of the wash basket ( left in pocket and fallen out)
Bottom of wardrobe

under bench where you straightened it out
Other jacket
Wife's other handbag
WIfe's other jacket
Under something in the safe
sock drawer
bedside table drawer
Office drawers
Old Pair of trousers you haven't worn for a while
Golf Bag ( This is a favourite of mine for things - I play golf about four times a year, my best find so far was a favourite jumper I accused OH of shrinking and binning - she has form - and sixty quid!)
Other sport based bag
Back of sofa
dog bed ( do you have a thievey hound?)
