RE: Aston Martin DB11 vs. Porsche 911 Turbo S

It wasn't that long ago that the complaint about Astons was how they all look alike - an accusation that has somewhat oddly never been aimed at Porsche despite it being more than appropriate.
It's true. In the entirity of Pistonheads history, nobody has ever said that Porsche styling is 'a bit samey'. Never. Ever. It's a touch unfair to choose between these two on the basis of their finish/hue. Both are admirable cars in their own way, but with the right colour scheme, I would probably gravitate towards the Aston Martin. It's really rather attractive in a rich deep lustre - whether that be olive green metallic, slate grey or similar. It's not as timeless as the DB9 to my eyes, but I think it will be a grower. It's JUST on the right side of fussy - IF the colour and better (non-black) wheels are right.
I have to confess to loving the interior of the DB11. Like Maseratis, Astons suit flashes of bright / contrasting leather. The Porsche looks utterly dull/insipid inside by comparison (although I know you can get some lurid colours in a 911 if you want - problem being that the whole dash, not just segments, comes in the same pantone colour). A rich metallic blue outside, with that interior, would work. Not duck egg blue though. Last time I saw that colour was buying cushions in Next. In 2005.

Durr that supercar in a lairy colour is no good. I'm insanely boring. I'd only have it in black or grey. I have no personality
That bottom-of-swimming-pool is horrible.I'd have mine in Arden Green, ta. Body colour roof rails, black roof, shadow chrome wheels.
If you think that personality-less and insanely boring, then you'll probably take the 911 in Lava Orange or Miami Blue, I'd guess?

That looks pretty good from that oblique front view - much better in that colour - but side on and certainly rear three-quarters, I just cannot come to terms with the shape.
I wouldn't kick it out of bed. Or my garage...
Perhaps not the best of angles of it, but it's hardly a world-class munter, is it?

It looks good in these pictures. The colour is handsome and the wheels are a lot, lot nicer.
Indeed. It just makes that blue even more mind-boggling.r129sl said:
I would still prefer to see it without that naff vent behind the front wheel and without the black strip under the rear quarter windows.
The vents ain't going to happen, any more than the grille's likely to change shape in a hurry. But I don't mind either them or the black strip. TBH, without the strip, I think the r3q might look a bit heavy - it helps to break the line up the side.As for the contrasting roof sides...

Blimey! That must be the most spartan Porsche options list in history! They still managed to charge £122 for isofix though. Form is temporary etc.
Nearly everything that matters comes as standard in the porka TTS Stuff like Adaptive Cruise, Overtaking/ lane change etc nannies are not standard.
You can do tons on silly stuff too like wood, stitching, alcantara petrol caps (not really and the like though if you really want to bling it up..

I think some of the 'bits' hark back to its forebears. The thing is though, a 911 turbo is a thing in and of itself, in a similar way to a Golf GTi or a Ford Transit; everyone knows what to expect and what its for, the 991 merely being the latest incarnation. It does exactly what it says on the tin. If the turbo is your thing and you want a brand new, box-fresh car with OEM warranty, it is a sort of no-brainer. if your head and heart are set on a 911 turbo then there's not likely to be much to sway you.

How have Aston let that colour scheme out on a new car that goes to the press?
Fair enough if down the line, a paying customer wants to choose that colour but what an own goal.
And it doesn't have the proper Aston grill and the black roof does it no favours either.
I went to the local dealer launch where a slate green colour was on show with the slatted grill and it looked great.
Totally agree. Why! Solid blue with black is grim. I spotted one in Gunmetal with Silver roof strakes! Fabulous, if predictable. Mind you, I have a sneaking lust for Cinnabar Orange! Fair enough if down the line, a paying customer wants to choose that colour but what an own goal.
