I wouldn't mind a look at the non-sporting Sierras, if you've got the time. Sicken me with how little you could pick a mint one up for, please. Other than that, I wouldn't mind seeing the AE86 Corolla coupes, if there are any in the magazines. They're worth substantial amounts of money nowadays but there was meant to have been a time when they were dirt cheap.

Played that game in 1976 as a 14 y/o. Was helping a mate do up his room and when we pulled up the carpet, previous people had used Exchange and Mart as underlay, from 1964. So we started calling about cars for sale. First few calls were fruitless but eventually we struck gold. One of those people who show their anger or surprise by just repeating back what you've told them, in a shouty voice. Call went something like:Me: Good afternoon, I'm calling about the Austin Cambridge you have for sale.
Random Bloke: You've got the wrong number I'm afraid, although I used to have one many years ago.
Me: I don't think I have got the wrong number. Two tone blue and white, red leather interior, 12K miles. January 1963 car. Job loss forces sale.
RB: Bloody hell, that's the one. That was years ago!
Me: Has it gone then?
RB: HAS IT GONE YET!!!!! IT WAS OVER 10 YEARS AGO. OF COURSE IT'S BLOODY GONE. WHAT THE HELL DO YOU EXPECT.
Me: That's a shame. I've been mulling it over.
RB: MULLING IT OVER!!!!
Me: I didn't want to rush into anything.
RB: DIDN'T WANT TO RUSH INTO ANYTHING!!!
And so on. I think in the end he could hear us pissing ourselves laughing so he hung up.
Not quite AT but period Motorsport News ads, spotted this one whilst working at Petrolhead Heaven (Bramham Park Place owned by ex Gulf man) Perusing the magazine rack we happened to find an old Merc 300SL Gullwing for sale & what appeared to be the same model for sale at Auction currently.

My standard holiday reading was a copy of Top Marques. Wife could never understand how I could read it for 2 weeks. 380 pages of the "what would I buy for £8k/£12k/£15k" game. Brilliant.
We know that some car prices are silly now. A look at a 2000 copy confirms. If a Porsche is LHD and has a poor spec then it should be cheap, just like the 964 RS in this ad. If you wanted a classic, a 911 2.7 RS is up for £30k. Silly money

The real deal is getting a copy of Motor Sport from the 70s. GT40s and Lolas for pin money.
I've owned and driven quite a few modern classics - E30 M3s, Integrales, Cosworths et al. They're great cars.
I turned an E30 Sport Evo for 6 grand as it was an ex Pirelli development car and a bit sad. You could get sub 15,000 mile Integrale Evo 2s in Italy for 7-10 grand all day long.
I'm glad I got it out of my system when it was still affordable. There's no way in hell I'd ever give a fraction of current asking prices. Cars are not liquid and I remember the late 80s well. No doubt someone'll be along with 'new paradigm' or 'it's different this time'. Sure.
The most bizarre example is the Mercedes 190 Evo II that sold at auction for nearly 300 grand a short while back. That was a 12-18 grand car back in the day and looks aside it really wasn't much of a goer.

Indeed it is!Errors of some sort or another were commonplace when Auto Trader was print only. Our agent used to come round on a Tuesday morning to take the pictures, sort out wording etc. You would be all geared up for the magazine to hit the shelves later in the week often only to see some kind of mistake! The worst one I had was for a particularly nice E34 BMW. Splashed out on the bigger 'king spot' advert for maximum impact, out comes the mag and instead of being in at £7995 its in at £1995! The phone didn't stop ringing for days on end and I was still getting the odd call weeks and weeks later! Any errors all they would ever offer was a corrected advert for the following week.
Looking back it must have been a huge undertaking to get the magazine compiled and onto the shelves every week.
