It's possibe to drive to (or from) the Calais ferry terminal without going along the stretch past the jungle, just drive through the town centre instead. The route is obvious from a glace at Google Maps.

We crossed Dover-Dunkerque and back a couple of weeks ago, and didn't see any sign of any problems at all. Not one single person wandering around. The car did get a very cursory check on entering the port, though.
No-one wants to hang around Dunkerque! Good god, it's grim there!
Not even the truck jumpers , Calais is much more upmarket !

Was there this morning, no obvious craziness.

We went Dover to Calais on 17th September and back again on 28th. Daylight crossings but nothing to see, save for the jungle in the distance. Lots of security and fencing though. Place did seem deserted.

Night time would be a different experience I'm sure, but fuel up in Dover and you should be OK.

As said: use the tunnel. Have crossed many times this year without problems. Advice: don't fuel up too near the crossing on the French side on the way back to the uk; don't travel in the early hours.
