Is privacy glass becoming council?
Discussion
I think it depends on the level of tint.
The Golf R comes with 65% tint as standard, which seems fine and doesn't look too bad. I wouldn't even consider going for a darker tint.
And I probably wouldn't have paid any extra for a tint at all if it wasn't included.
The worst thing is badly applied tints, illegal tints, or tints that are completely blackout. They look bad and can even be dangerous.

However, godsend if you have kids. How sad is your life if you have Peppa fking Pig blinds on the rear windows. NOT UNDER MY WATCH KIDDY.
How the hell did we survive childhood without either...?auto windscreen wipers
Auto arse wipers.
Your caveat is a wise on, not every invention is progress.
Progress might be auto-tinting glass in the back...or some manual/auto blinds like those found in the Vx Signum or Renault Vel Satis.
A fixed-tint-film which visually turns an ordinary car into a van is not progress IMO
In the same way spending thousands on beautifully designed alloy wheels and then painting them black so the design becomes lost..is not (a fashion choice admittedly)
or removing the responsibility of brain power required to turn lights of wipers on...that's not preogress

It's not about survival. It's about improving things. Like pretty much every other invention and development of mankind since time began. It's called progress.

And does ANYBODY like automatic electronic parking brakes?

Or, back in the '70s, on Citroen CXs. As standard.Or even just a movable sunshade on the sprogseat.
My 2003 STI Impreza (owned at that time) came with black rear side and rear screen tint from the factory.
Initially, I was going to rip it all out and replace it, but looking out from inside the car, you didn't really notice it much (Yes, even reversing in the dark).
So I just lived with it as it wasn't my every day car.

I'm not a fan of it but it came fitted on the car you wanted and there was no other choice, you'd have to be slightly on the 'spectrum' to not buy a car just because someone on the internet thinks it looks council.
Having blackout tints on the front windows is a bigger problem, but as with many things, nothing is done because there are no police around to enforce the rules on tints.
I don't have any visibility issues from it, so it doesn't bother me.

Off topic, but to my eyes the proportions of that car just look wrong.Having blackout tints on the front windows is a bigger problem, but as with many things, nothing is done because there are no police around to enforce the rules on tints.

Headlights too large, wheels look too small and more.
As you were...

I've always found it useful in the summer, especially with kids in the back of the car.
This.Personally I hate it, and as a post above, err less aged owners forum members at the time thought I was mad not to spec on my 135i....
However, as said above, for carrying youngsters/animals etc., and maybe for some, carrying other stuff that's you'd like to be less obviously visible, it does perform a useful function, and as such will be reluctantly ticked on the option list of the new X5 in due course.
I HATE rear tints on new cars, or more to the point, that they just come with them as standard. As people have said, it makes them look like vans.
I've actually put front tints on my (black) RS6 because it did look like a panel van. Not interested in looking like a gangster, but it just looked so 'unbalanced' having limo tint (OEM) at the rear and then nothing on the front.
Here's a good illustration of the difference:

As numerous folk have said it depends.
In my view it depends largely on quality and legality
Badly applied film looks horrible, all round black tints look imo dangerous/chav.
I like factory fit privacy, sun protection, call it what you will glass and have had it on all our recent cars bar two seaters.
How else are the kids supposed to get a proper view of the tv screens in the back ...............?

You can probably get away with it on certain cars but on others it will always scream drug dealer or Towie cast member. When I specced my RR Sport without tinted rear windows the dealer thought I was mad but it looks 1000 times better without and on the occasion you need shade in the back there are bespoke RR custom blinds. When I see a Range Rover in white with black rear glass I just think what a great design ruined and then what a chav. 😀

Mainly it "depends" on whether you like Chav.
Customarily chippy and sweeping statement. Keep up the good work.TazLondon said:
So, is privacy glass, which has become the modern version of tinted windows, becoming council?
Yes.Forty or more years ago it was seen as having a touch of class and was relatively rare, as for today, I suppose it depends on the car and how well it's been done.... this 1970 Wood & Pickett Cooper S has 'Shadolite' glass all round and the contrasting chrome trim finishes it off nicely...
On an all black car I think it's too much, but it's difficult to avoid the drug dealer look on so many modern cars.
