I don't know whether to be delighted by your comprehensive response or scared that it cane be made into a book.... Haven't found a single online buying guide as yet!
I've got Niks w126 guide that preceded this book in PDF (30 or so pages) - if you ping me a msg with your email address I'll send it on

I do. I don't think your route takes in any decent driving roads until you get to mid-Wales. I would come over from Gloucestershire via some of the more interesting roads that criss cross the Brecon Beacons. Roads like the Rhigos mountain road and A4069 are outstanding. Slow route but stunning and surely better than the M4 and into Pembs.

Then there are the usual suspects such as the Elan Valley, Devil's Bridge, Evo triangle etc.

If you're hell bent on going into Pembrokshire first then I recommend Narbeth as a place to stay. It's a lovely little town.

Pembrokeshire itself is an amazing place to visit, think Cornwall but without the 'inflation', but isn't all that for a driving holiday.

Ask if you want to know more and I'll try to help.
That's really useful, thanks. I'm not at all fixed on starting in Pembrokeshire so will probably do as you recommend and cross closer to the middle. I'll do some research and then I may get back to you for more advice if that's OK.

Any of the thread readers know Wales at all and able to offer a view? I'm not sure how extensively read the regional forums are.

Lovely quiet homely stuff and a wonderful restaurant here:

Not cheap, but a real treat. Nice roads to and from, in most directions.

I think you can be fairly confident it's not a £150 fix. I expect he's taken that to his man (before or after he bought it) and his man said ££££££.

You might be lucky though. Thing is you have to be lucky every time. The ABC only has to be lucky once.

On the other hand, you could pay more money for a CL600 in great shape, only to be facing that same bill a month down the line. So is it that big a deal?

Trouble is it could be something nice and easy like a pipe that's corroded etc, or it could be a broken strut, valve block etc which is mucho moolah.

We've had non-turbo 600's in better condition than that for less, I'd hold out, or go to see it with my haggling pants on.

I'm far from a Merc beard, but if it's an ABC W/L, don't these have problems with the ABC pump?
A quick google of the fault description and C215 CL600 should send you down the right path.
I still can't believe how crap the interiors are.
EVERY single Merc just looks like a taxi inside, to my eyes.

Thanks SJ. Not cheap at all - that's the equivalent of a lot of petrol! I'll try and book a night there.

I think the warning light being in white is not such a problem, in fact if you leave an ABC car sitting for a while so it sinks onto its suspension that warning light comes up. It can be reset with STAR and will not re-appear if the car is regularly used.

On the other hand it could be a disaster.

Its strong point is the manual. (I had a 2.4 - previous model - Multichronic gearbox)

The 2.4 is quite a nice engine, and various reports suggest it should go inter-stellar. That's about all the good things I have to say about Audis. Boring, and bits will fall off, understeers very badly and anything that needs fixing probably expensive. But at disposable prices, could be a bargain!

Rather have an E39 or a W210 by a factor of c.1000.

Fair enough, me too I think, it is incredibly cheap though.

I think if your basic requirement is anonymous, characterless and generally reliable barging that'd be a good purchase. They have a total lack of character, but some people don't want character from cars.

I'd be tempted to spend a bit more on something nicer. How about this handsome chap?

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

Economical, manual gearbox (if you like that sort of thing), saleable metallic colour, high (but not silly) mileage.
