Just been out to it, as I've got it here at work....

Does the air con work? - It appears not - it's stuck in EC mode. I'll get that checked as I genuinely thought that was all okay.

Do the heated/cooled/ortho/electic seats work? Seats all function with exception of the headrests which no longer go up and down.

How bad is the rust on the underside, especially around the boot wells? I haven't looked to be honest, I'll get photos.

Has the suspension ever had any work (like new front shocks, new bushes)? New front springs fitted in Feb this year, and an o/s/f roll bar link. New rear air shocks also fitted this year since then.

Has the gearbox been serviced? Not to my knowledge, no.

What is the chassis number? WDB2102702X095069

Does it have comfort suspension? Not that I'm aware of

Does it have a tow bar? No, and it has never been used for towing.

I'm away with work until November.

Otherwise I'd have that.

No comfort to either of us, I know.

Any thoughts on this?

It's a loooooong way from where I live. However, a manual is rare, is it not? Would love to go and see it but it'll be a whole day out for me.

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

Looks alright but the manual box is not really desirable. Nice mileage though.........£1700 would be better.
I thought a manual would be better on an older car. Less to go wrong?
The manual is desirable if you want a manual, the auto is desirable if you want an auto. I wanted a manual 530i Touring and it took a long time to get one, they are like hen's teeth. Wouldn't trade it for a slusher.

Dunno, I wouldn't countenance a manual E39 myself. The autobox might go wrong, probably not tbh and for 1500 quid, it's worth the gamble for an infinitely nicer drive. The manual will definitely need a clutch at some point - that's guaranteed.

E39 used autobox £250, fluids and fitting about the same.
The autoboxwill also definitely need a rebuild at some point. The question is at what point. My manual needed a clutch at 145,000 miles, and I expect it to go well beyond 250,000 now before it needs another. My last E39 slushbox died at 120K miles.

Whether the auto is an "infintely nicer drive" is purely a question of personal taste, whether you have the use of your left leg, and how, possibly where, you use the car. Having had two auto E39s and one manual, I'm in no hurry to have another auto

W211s:

That said it's a very refined, composed companion, capable of 40+mpg on a run, and moves very decently indeed. Special mention for the engine... there really is no vibration in the cabin at all, just a thrumming under high load. At small throttle cruise it's completely indistinguishable from road noise.
You could be describing my E39.

40mph = 1100ish rpm: on a smooth road, it could well be an electric.

Also, as with most 16-year old cars, it is louder than it should be as the windscreen and door seals are knackered.

This is a good sign. You can't see the road at all.

Air con. It will stick in EC if there is no gas.

Could I bear to move along my s124???

Just dropped it off at my local garage who has re-charged the AC, no leaks, so all is well. Just needs the fault codes clearing to take it out of EC mode. So hopefully will be done in an hour or so.

Thanks for the W211 info all - what a great thread this is.

And apologies to all E60/1 owners out there but I prefer the look of the W211 in more basic forms. However, I do like the look of an E61 with the 18 inch m-sport wheels as I am a bit of a tart!
Just to add to the 211 info, I've had a pre-facelift E220 CDI estate and we currently have an 09 E320 CDI estate (with the V6 engine) on 118k miles. The pre-facelift car was faultless but I only had it for its first year. The Sport is based on the avantgarde spec but adds 18" wheels, aluminium pedals with rubber studs, different stitching on the seats and a few bits and bobs. The ride suffers on 18" wheels, and it's calmer when on 17" for winter. I've rebuilt the front suspension and have new rear bags ready to go on when I get a chance, and the boot lock failed, but otherwise it's been pretty faultless. The V6 is nowhere near as economical as the straight 6 - this car never betters 40mpg even on a run, although I have a heavy foot; the inlet port motors drown in oil from a leak from the inlet tract, and it had a new one at about 80k miles. We have the same engine in a CLS - inlet motor at 75k miles, new turbo at 118k miles, it's now on 126k but will do 45mpg on a steady run. New front suspension again, and it eats springs, but otherwise all good.

If I could find a decent facelift E500 estate at reasonable money, I'd be tempted to make that my "lifetime" car - they don't appear to rust, are accessible to home spannering and are pretty well put together.

Only you can decide that, but you couldn't be in a better position with an E430 already to contrast side by side with the 124.

Mini barge purchase.

Whether this counts as a barge or not is up for debate, however in true thread style it has been purchased from Ebay unseen from a nice chap 250 miles away from me. Never even driven one before - but always liked the look of them. Low miles and only 3 owners helped make up my mind - as well as the current owner being a massive Saab enthusiast who has addressed the known weak spots. It is also the HOT aero version - not expecting it to be fast, but it does mean it is well specced and I quite like the bigger bumpers. What are the collective's thoughts on these?
One way train ticket booked for next Thursday to collect - will get a forecourt pic on the way back to Edinburgh.

It is the start of my mini barge fleet, as it joins my E46 330 convertible which can now take some time off for the winter months.
Excellent.

The last of the good ones before they got Edna'd.
I don't think they Dame Edna'd the 9-3 did they?

One can never have too many S210s. Possibly

Looks good, especially at that price. That garage is about 30mins from me, they advertise from time to time on Retrorides, the adverts always come across as being decent.

My old 540i's popped back up again:

https://www.gumtree.com/p/bmw/bmw-e39-540i-m-sport...

Looks to be sold by the trader that I sold it to, refurbed the alloys but still not disclosing the Cat-C marker that I did (hence the £2.1k premium he's now asking)
