I thought Threadists may be interested in a brief update on Herman, as there have been a few similar Audis posted in the past few weeks.
Bought for £4500 in late June/early July this year. 118k miles, recent history, full MOT and all that. It's a 4.2 FSI V8 Quattro in SE spec, which are apparently relatively rare. Codgermatic, natch.
Overall it's been an absolute joy. One of its first jobs was to take me and a mate, plus three bikes and camping kit, to the Nurburgring for Rad Am Ring - it swallowed the distance with absolutely no issues whatsoever. Seats are more comfortable than any Audi I've previously owned (normally I find them too flat) and the Bose system makes a lovely noise. Overall average for the trip was 26.5mpg, including some spirited driving through the Eiffel region and a spell at 130mph+ on the Autobahn chasing down a 993.
I find it absolutely brilliant that such a boring-looking old beast can pick up such a turn of speed. When you bury the throttle there's a brief hesitation while it kicks down and finds its voice, and then suddenly you're doing 100mph. Coming from an FN2 to this has been a revalation - in the FN2 it feels like you're going more quickly, but in this, the miles per hour simply seem to accumulate, like a fast train.
Only a few niggles so far. Boot release makes a noise like a machine gun, one warped disc, and it occasionally smells a bit hot when parking it. Oh and the numberplates need replacing as the bolts have gone rusty! But - touch wood - I think it's a goodun.

You've nailed what it's all about, as far as I can see. You don't need to do many long runs to feel be benefit of compliant suspension, decent build quality and a woofley V8 barely ticking over.I find it absolutely brilliant that such a boring-looking old beast can pick up such a turn of speed. It's 250 miles door to door to my parents, and I've been doing it on my own, a lot more regularly recently. Sometimes I don't even have the radio on, I just enjoy the peace. (But then when some Bellend in a Corsa squeaks past you on the A46 above Leicester, cuts you up, goes round the left hand feeder that skips the roundabout like a pensioner, and can't get his 1.2 wound back up, you can unleash a bit of gargle to get back up to cruising speed in no time at all.) I get 30 mpg at an indicated 0.8 leptons, over the mostly motorway miles. I've done it in the mother-in-law's Clio at the same speed, and it just managed to do 40mpg. It's worth the cost to arrive completely fresh and relaxed.
Glad you're getting on well with it.
Following on from the V8 dog-carrier love, this is not one I've spotted this Spanish E39 540i Tourer before:

I dislike the wheels. The M5 and M nonsense would need to come off. Ideally the trim would be switched to walnut, which would make the gear lever look much nicer.
Being an 02 it should have Isofix in the back too, so the perfect family wagon.
Should be haggle-able into thread budget, right?

I barge half way to work and cycle the rest. I was cycling home the other night through the badlands of South London and I saw a curious car, it's the second time I've seen it. The first time was a few months ago, I tried to take a video but it was too dark to make out the reg plate. This time I just noted down the number.
It was a pre-facelift S124 E200 (or 200E, I forget which), quite scrappy looking.
The reg number: LN03JXA
How can this be?

I'd guess at it being Malaysian on Indian built grey import car, of which I believe a few made their way to the UK in the early 00's. I did think that they were all facelift cars though...It was a pre-facelift S124 E200 (or 200E, I forget which), quite scrappy looking.

V8, Touring, Manual...It certainly ticks all the right boxes! No LSD though. At that mileage I would want to find out what Gearbox and cooling system work it's had done.

I take it that it's the G-wagon that blew the budget rather than the 190? Looks great. The problem with thread, and has been from day one, and 10 volumes back is that a best smoker barge seems to indicate it is a cheap thing to run. It's not. So the word Best is completely out of place.
It might be to buy and then will statistically cost more to run over the next 20 000 miles than a small Citroen C1 diesel that does 60mpg and can be chipped ! When something goes wrong, like the engine, it's cheap to fix.
I guess that is not sexy though.
What this thread should be called is
MEN WHO LIKE CARS TRY TO MAKE ANOTHER EXCUSE FOR GETTING ANOTHER CAR TO STROKE THEIR CAR FETISH WHILST THE WIFE EITHER NODS HER HEAD SAGELY OR JUST LEAVES YOU FOR A VEGETARIAN LIBRARIAN WHO RIDES A BIKE AND HAS NO BELLY PAUNCH.....
This is just a mutual masturbation session for men who should know better.
Continue wk wk wk for the next 10 volumes .....
Now looking forward to
"I bought an M5 E90 and using chip fat oil has cost me less than 20p over the last 14 276 miles. I also have 3 wives"
