Are any of the petrol engines prone to the old head gasket issues?
Yes they were, but whilst when new they were being repaired with the same crap parts they were built with, the new multi-layer gaskets and sump rail mean that as long as it's fixed properly (including vacuum-filling the coolant) then once fixed they stay fixed. Most have been done now. The parts are cheap and a techie who knows what he's doing won't take long. For a while back in the day every dealership had one or two techies who basically did nothing else but HG replacements. Those same cars would be back 6 months later, as the same parts had the same inherent faults. Not any more.
K-Series HGF is now one of those teeth-sucking car-enthusiast-status-proving pub-facts that has grown legs much longer than it deserved. I suspect it wouldn't have been quite so famous if Rover had been German.
There was an enormous problem with it. Now there isn't.
There have been a few pop up near me. I never considered them as I didn't know the full picture about the head gasket issues.
A decent 75 would be ideal for me though, especially in estate form (tall with a 2 3/4 year old). I like the styling and I think they are a very understated car.

The only ones with a head gasket reputation are the 1.8 and 1.8 turbo. The rest of the petrols are V6s. Just in case that reassures you! There have been a few pop up near me. I never considered them as I didn't know the full picture about the head gasket issues.

And the head gasket thing isn't much of a concern if it's repaired properly with an MLS gasket (probably still available from Land Rover or Lotus, amongst dozens of vendors)

A tidy high-spec (Connoisseur on early cars, Connoisseur SE on late cars) diesel estate is the pick of the bunch. There have been a few pop up near me. I never considered them as I didn't know the full picture about the head gasket issues.

They sell easily and hold their money well, and the gearbox doesn't really matter - there's demand for both.

Wow. Some lovely stuff there. What happens to 'not sold' stuff, and why doesn't it sell?
I see the old Fords still fetch a price. A fiesta went for over £8k!
I love the XK's and the 7 series that didn't sell.

The not sold stuff hasn't met it's reserve, some are sold post auction via negotiation, others will be disposed of elsewhere. The £8,400 Fiesta XR2 looks crazy money, especially against the £300 Saxo VTS. W140 CL500 looks very nice for £2,100; green XJR looks very good too. What happens to 'not sold' stuff, and why doesn't it sell?

Totally agree on Ford pricing, but the VTS was rather rotten at its last MOT, and they covered it with the spare wheel! Hence £300.funkyrobot said:

Well built, not very exciting, solid.
For £500 if it drives alright get it bought!
Seem ok. But what the hell do you do with it if anything goes wrong? For £500 if it drives alright get it bought!
I've been scouring the internet for some sort of workshop manual. The only thing I can find is a dodgy looking CD on ebay that says it covers all engines for this model. No idea if it can be trusted though.

When you have to many Vel Sati to count and you think one is worth £8k, you can be sure that you've crossed the line of committed bargeist and moved into raving lunatic territory.£575
