Some very cheap cars at Brightwells modern classics auction yesterday http://www.brightwells.com/classic-motoring/leomin...
I'm in love with that T25 Syncro.OK here's the real deal.
Sub £2000 - check
V6 (not affected by dodgy gaskets) - check
Auto - check (a must on the 75)
Moonstone green - check
Walnut steering wheel (expensive extra) - check
Walnut handbrake (expensive extra) - check
Walnut gearstick (expensive extra) - check
Factory satnav
Low miles - check
Short of a "smiley" rear number plate this one has nearly all the most sought after factory extras an enthusiast could wish for. And look at that interior, allegedly the dials were designed to look like something out of a steam train. Doesn't say when cambelts are due (£400 every six years) and the thermostats on the V6 are the commonest but easiest to fix cause of coolant leaks. But what a car!

years ago back when i worked in the trade i had a 2.0 diesel rover 75 in metallic mint green with cream leather. I only had it as a bit of a joke even then. It came across as so cringingly retro, up until you realised that Rover probably didn't even think they were being retro - they just still designed cars like that from the 50s right up until the 90s. Like when you see an old bloke dressed as a teddy boy nowadays.

In fairness to Rover in the 1990s, I got the impression they'd sooner be making 2.0 turbo Tomcats but BMW saw them as a British retro twee complement to the BMW range tobinen said:
And all the 944s went unsold. Reserves too high, possibly?
This just proves how utterly speculative and frothy the "modern classic" market actually is. It's OVER and the little insight this auction gives helps demonstrate it.
There will be plenty of people left holding an overpriced paper weight!
I'd say so if it looks OK on inspection.

There will be plenty of people left holding an overpriced paper weight!Perhaps. I presume lots of high reserves accounting for the unsold lots.
That 205 sounds like an odd one - only one MOT under its current plate, with a hefty fail then pass in 2015, so currently expired.
Quite a nice-looking TVR Chimp in there as well, only 6k, although it needed some TLC that seems like a very shrewd buy.

Wouldn't draw any conclusions from that auction, more 'NOT SOLD' than sold. treetops said:

The 205 has 1.9 wheel on n/s/f in pic's, and looking at MOT history that looks to have been going on when present for the one and only test on that plate, certainly an odd one.

We'll just carry on driving around in our old crocks after everyone else is force to put a match to all the diesels you are doom-mongering about in other parts of the forum. It's OVER and the little insight this auction gives helps demonstrate it.

9 litres of barge 1-5 goodness:
The SL is now out and about with the hardtop off. Aside from a dodgy back window and the chav exhaust it's in good health. It's miles quicker than the jag which I am surprised at given the marginal power advantage and similar weight.
It's a rather nice looking old thing in my opinion following the respray.

1. I tried to persuade a friend to buy one a few years ago. We want and saw 3 75s that looks good in the pictures, but all of them had major and multiple bits of trim hanging or falling off. We might have been unlucky, but I failed in my barge conversion mission and he ended up with a Mondeo - a car that just works. £800 and no trim falling off.
2. All in, purchase price, delivery and MOT bill, my Jag XJ8 was about £2k. I struggle to justify the 75 in light of this. MPG to date is 24mpg which isn't great, but I doubt the v6 75 is that much better, and in the context of running an old wafter MPG isn't a primary concern.
with regards to the lack of performance on the jaguar . i may have dreamed it but jaguars of this era , certainly my old xjr , have an ecu that learns your driving style. so you may need to disconnect the battery to reset this. having made sure you have the radio code to hand.
it may be an urban myth , my memory is not the best. i am sure somebody more knowledgeable can put us straight.

It is reasonable to assume that the 5.0 M119 produces more power than it is claimed to. There's no other reason for the well documented fact, repeated in many road tests carried out in different places at different times over the years, that an early R129 500SL keeps up with a 928S4.The Porsche and Mercedes use the same auto transmission, are on very similar wheels and tyres, and are the same sort of size and drag coefficient. The Porsche nominally has almost identical same power (320 hp) from its own 5.0 V8, but is a hefty 330 kg lighter (1550 kg plays 1890 kg, the Merc being weighed down by the convertible body reinforcement and all the electro-hydraulics). That is a terrific weight difference.
The Merc must produce more power than the Porsche. Based on the near identical acceleration numbers, I think the Merc is about 380 hp. Either that or the Porsche is only about 265, which seems unlikely given that it hits a top speed of 170.
