Looks really rather nice, wonder if it will stay within thread budget, wonder if my mrs would kill me.
I like that.

This claim is one that surely needs testing though: "The S Class is in great condition for an 18 year old car, and will give the new owner many years of happy motoring with no expensive bills"
Yes that line did raise a small smile. Then again that has been my experience of W140s so far

Only a short trip over the hills for me if anyone wants me to take a look. Almost matching colour with my 760 too (hmm, 2x v12?). smile

Shame it's only 2 days to go - much better place to meet than York!

Ebay also led me here... I prefer this style s-class, but no experience of them other than as a passenger aged 15 in Deutschland, was impressive at the time. Thoughts?

You know, that doesn't look too horrific as a starting point. The MOT history is not the end of the world. The interior looks OK. The specification is pretty good. Obviously it needs gingers and about £3k on the bodywork but it could be spiffing once done.

It's this sort of attention to detail that distinguishes this thread from lesser examples.

Does anyone have a link to dbdb's guide to buying a XJ40?
Is this it? - I have a feeling I may have written one more than once. https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

One thing I didn't think to include is that if you are looking at an XJR, then check it is a real one rather than a body kitted XJ6 or Sovereign. The VIN will tell you how it left the factory.

VINs starting:

SAJJF= XJ6, XJ6 Gold & 3.2S/4.0S
SAJJH = Sovereign
SAJJP = XJR
Daimler = SAJDK

Long wheelbase cars (called the Majestic) have the identifier letter 'M' as the 7th character in the VIN. Standard wheelbase cars have an 'L'.

I only say this because there a few fake XJRs about - and lots of XJ40s claim to be 'long wheelbase', but the genuine lwb cars are very rare.

Hmm, I am thinking of having a punt on that. Loved my W140 S500L, did not bond with the W140 S600C but think an S600L like this and in such a great colour would be ideal. Will see how tomorrow evening S600 TT repair session goes.....

What's still wrong with it? Thought you had it sorted now?

I think I might sell the gold 300E, 190 (poster r129SL first dibs!), and Jag - so I can focus on getting the green 300E and r129 exactly how I want them.

I dug the green 300E out tonight and the old thing is such a faithful old car. After a jump start (it had been left for a couple of months again!) it purrs away. It's really rusty, has massive miles, a wobble at 50 etc etc, but I am just so fond of it. It's by far my favourite of all the cars! I can't can it for the gold one.

Nope frown

To be honest I'm a bit fearful of the bill/viability the gold 300E... it was running really rough when I put into my mechanic, needed discs and pads, a new exhaust. It has been lurking in the corner of his workshop gradually having bits done.

I started to feel seasick viewing it on Ye Olde Bay of Fleas too - now it feels like being multiple-smacked by a boomerang too!

As W126 Coupe prices have shot skywards for the minters (and for the me-too 100k milers as well, natch) this caught my eye at within thread budget. Cracked dash, silver not the best colour and no doubt all manner of parcel-shelf grot, but stripey blue velour makes up for a lot.

MOT history suggests nothing immediately terrifying and that the car has been being used, probably all the better for it.

Very modest spec W140 280 but an attractive looking car. Will be interesting where it finishes within thread budget.

i wonder if any bargists have done any record keeping as far as actual A/C remediation costs required after buying cars in ads where they state only a simple re-gas is all that's needed!! I would assume in at least 90% of cases it needs something considerably more significant. The example above is mental though, pretty obviously something bad!!
