On the subject of 190s. Have a look at the pictures in this ad. WTF? As the young people say.

Edit: and another one! What on earth is happening here? Why take photographs of your computer screen and then upload them to Autotrader?

I hesitated before posting this mini-barge but there is no prospect of me buying it. Somebody should, though. Colours and condition look lovely and the air con would be a welcome addition to an otherwise ultra spartan specification.

I keep looking at this every day. It's a stunning piece of design or am I weird? Do any of the eagle eyed 190 experts ( predominantly R129) see any issues on that car?
It looks great to me. The MOT history is not perfect, suggests it could do with new brake and fuel lines sooner or later, but show me a 25 year old car that couldn't. They are very complete cars, even in Sparta spec. That one has air con which makes it very usable. And the low power engine isn't an issue when it is so light.
Mine bumbles around fine, but 60+mph does become a bit tiring as do hills. It may have been down on power, but has just had a new cat and I've not driven it since. There is a chance the K-Jet system needs adjusting? Is this a thing?

More than happy with it for what I use it for though.

I knew a trader almost 40 years ago who used to write sold as seen for spares or repair on the invoice of all his cheap cars, you signed the invoice before handing over your cash, if you didnt like you walked away at that point saved everyone any grief.

I notice a lot of traders on Ebay are now advertising their older and high mileage stock as spares or repair yet stating in the advert there are no known faults with the vehicle, but if you buy it on those terms then you obviously know there is no comeback.

In which case why bother even dealing with a trader ?

Surely you'd be better off saving your money and cutting out the trader ?

Also these days the private seller is getting to be a rare species. Filter by "private" on Autotrader and see your options vanish!

Traders make a market. There are fewer and fewer private sellers these days.

The motor trade is terribly consumer-unfriendly. Even the main dealers—perhaps especially the main dealers—are beset by dubious practices. I don't know why this should be. But it's just not like John Lewis and Marks and Spencer. The buyers have got themselves to blame in part: they always think they are entitled to something for nothing.

Make the consumer rights optional and traders will simply insist that the consumer opted out. They will put an opt out in their terms and conditions. They will endorse the invoice. They will fabricate documents. Like it or not, something happens to a man when he becomes a car salesman. He leaves his scruples at the door of the showroom. It's like a law of the universe. They can't help it. It's not their fault. It's just the way it is. A bit like taxi drivers only worse. I know there are a few traders in this thread but I am unapologetic.

I expect selling a car "for spares or repairs" or on a "trade" basis would be regarded as an attempt to contract out of the Act: which is of course invalid.

It is also worth noting that even a true trade sale—i.e. a transaction between two traders—is on the implied terms of the Sale of Goods Act 1979. What matters is whether the seller is acting in the course of business. The status of the purchaser is irrelevant under the 79 Act.

The best way for a trader to sell a dud car is for him to disclose its faults. A disclosed fault cannot be the subject of action by the purchaser.

I think it's a reflection. It had me hooked at "extended leather".

Where is the leather extended to?!

I have no idea if they are genuine or not, but you could easily flog the AMG wheels and get some normal ones on there and make a bit of cash.

Everywhere. Leather dashboard, door cards, 'A' pillar trims, header rail, sun visors, hardtop lining, door mirror "sail" boards. It looks like this car has it, too.

It looks a bit rough—grille all dented, badges in the wrong place, wheels almost certainly snide—but for £3k? Seems like value to me.

I guess the only issue is that the mileage probably limits the value after if you put much money into getting it right.

It would be an interesting one to understand the history of though. Just possible it was garaged by an old chap who couldn't drive it any more (etc).

The r129 sits in that strange marketplace where values of good ones are uplifting, but the lower end of the market needs a lot spending on it (and won't be worth enough to justify massive investment). Having said that, I just took a look on auto trader and there are no sub £5k 500s (indeed the cheapest is just under £8k). There are a few elsewhere including this though.

When I purchased mine there were a load of sub £5k 500s, many of which turned out to be complete dogs on further investigation. I wonder if the dogs have a higher price tag now, or have been repaired or broken for spares?

Best to buy one good enough to drive and not worry too much!

Even though I own two of them, I can't help but look at every 300e on sale. I like this one: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

But the it has this weird back end that you see on a few w124s from the era - the caravan reflective back end. Yuk. Was this an official dealer thing?

This 300e is still for sale! My gold one isn't perfect (let's not even talk about the fact I haven't seen it since April), but that was 1/6ish of the price. Crazy money.

So, you saw a 2.6 manual and got overexcited? Entirely understandable.
