Even though I own two of them, I can't help but look at every 300e on sale. I like this one: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

But the it has this weird back end that you see on a few w124s from the era - the caravan reflective back end. Yuk. Was this an official dealer thing?

Those reflective bands were dealer accessories and aftermarket. A lot of the tat sold by dealers in 1970s and 80s wouldn't make the grade in Stuttgart but the dealers and the importer were much more independent then. See brochure below for a slightly different example:

This 300e is still for sale! My gold one isn't perfect (let's not even talk about the fact I haven't seen it since April), but that was 1/6ish of the price. Crazy money.

I've looked at that one a long while but I really think it is an over-priced polished turd.

The nearside front wing has the tiniest bleb of rust in the usual place. It will only get worse. The offside rear wheel arch looks to me to have been re-modelled in bodge. And I am very suspicious of the boot floor: it looks far too wobbly. It also has 150,000miles. It might be worth £2,500, less if my suspicious mind is in fact correct. It's a shame because light ivory, green MB tex, air con, orthopaedic seats, pre-facelift... pretty perfect spec.

I'm in Coventry tomorrow. I could nip over to Northampton for a look but, truthfully, I think my life is too short. And anyway, the dealer's ad states "full leather" which solecism means I'd have to kill him.

I think this came up the first time, and the same points were made. The price is mad. But it's Ivory. I love it from a distance.

I have to remind myself that I own this: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... . Sitting at the back of my mechanic's place, looking sorry for itself. I am really rubbish at putting the pressure on.

I had to look up my own thread to remember the mileage. Sub 100k. It does drive very well. Apart from the engine. I am quietly confident that going through the vacuum system, a full service including plugs, and sorting the distributer and leads will sort it. I hope. Aside from this it felt miles younger than the green one...

I must get onto Tommy when he gets back from holiday.

Not sure if I belong here anymore. Is it a sin against the gods of all that is musty carpet, extended leather and mild bork peril to weigh down your 1-5 smoker barge with a caravan?

I must say I thought the reflective things were by Zender, but it seems not

What is forum consensus on the Lexus hybrids (RX, GS, etc)?

The barge 1-5 class of car is ideal for caravans surely - comfy, happy to waft along at reasonable speeds, a largeish engine, no pretensions of "sportiness" lost in the process.

What's the ideal caravan for an old Merc?!

Good value (used, at least), pretty reliable, prestigious in that way Japanese cars are but German cars are not (a clincher for some, deal-breaker for others).

The only thing I can't get on with is Lexus' insistence on using CVT gearboxes. Not terribly pleasant to use at anything more than seven tenths. However, if all you ever do is waft about in a barge-like fashion, much less of an issue.

A static caravan on a decent plot.

One of those tiny beige and grey ones you see in the corner of Darling Buds of May type farmyards being used as a chicken coop.

Shabby chic.

Caravans. Really. Are we going to be discussing which coats are the easiest to unbutton quickly for when you want to flash next? Or how best to whip off your partners lingerie if she comes home early and catches you playing?

Keep these perversions to their dedicated corners of the internet please hehe

There's no way caravanners are weirder than 190e owners.

(I include myself in the latter category, and aspire to the former)

My shameful dirty little secret is that I have actually started looking at classic caravans with a view to finding one I can tow behind the SLC.

There, I said it.

My dirty secret is driving down the motorway with a 4 year old and a 2 year old taking it in turns to wake each other up, and looking at bigger camper vans thinking they'd both be fine asleep in one of those.

So I want a big camper. Ideally one with garage space for something like a Morgan 3 wheeler, and bikes. And a proper king bed for me and the wife, and bunkbeds the boys can sleep in when we're driving.

I'm pretty sure this doesn't exist.

But not a caravan.

I want a huge and unpleasant Winnebago as well.

Pop-outs everywhere and nasty bouncy vinyl swoops up the side.

Plastic veneer dashboard and cup-holders designed for a 128oz slurpy.

That 190 + streamlined van's a beauty...

I toyed with the idea of a nice brown vintage Mercedes based Hymer motorhome for longer than was efficient... Sadly they just don't have enough safe belted seats to be practical for a family.

We've gone for an out of thread budget, though still comprehensively 2nd hand (2010) Lunar. It has a natty triple decker bunk bed for the three young sons.

Not sure what the 80s w124 equivalent caravan would be. The Hymers are fabulous though... Particularly the kitchen wallpaper.
