Matching smoke silver 1 owner 62k mile 500SL R129 available too, and in thread budget. Needs bodywork but seems cheap, even if the ad is a bit thin. No airbags, not even ASR - spartan spec. But who ever would have both their W124 and their R129 in 702?

Only a man of great style and taste.http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...
If that 500 SL is not completely shagged and clocked, it is a bargain, bodywork neediness or not.
I'm in Darlington this afternoon. How far from you is that Zoner? Are you around?
Cardiff AND Darlo inside three days? Some girls have all the luck...
I'm about 40 mins south of there, between Northallerton and Thirsk. Stuck at home waiting for a heating oil delivery, as Yorkshire basks in a 13C heatwave. SL2 is under cover in the driving rain so I can't even go back in to look for obvious problems.

I'm near Nelson but don't even have Mercedes bumfluff. I might go and see that one though just to perv at the interior.
I think the fact that the owner has his address as Nelson, Glamorgan tells you everything you need to know about him. Nelson is up in the Rhondda valleys by Ystrad Mynach... Chaos, some R129 advice please.
I've test driven an ealy'ish SL500 with the 4 speed tranny this morning. Overall the car was in good shape, apart from a reluctance to change up through the gears. Pootling around in both economy and sport settings, the 'box held in second to around 3k before reluctantly shifting up with a bit of a jerk. I seem to remember my old one doing this until warm, but the test drive was long and the issue didn't resolve. As far as I'm aware, the 'box is on its original oil.
Any ideas?

My first port of call would be the bowden cable between the throttle and the gearbox.I've test driven an ealy'ish SL500 with the 4 speed tranny this morning. I would also check the vacuum modulator on the gearbox.
These transmissions are very, very robust.
I've been a bit preoccupied lately as some of you have noticed on the official mb club forum.
I managed to lock my keys in the boot of our S211 on the first night of our holiday. Happily all sorted out now.
I enjoyed reading the discussions on the merits of the E500 vs a 124.
I didn't have the patience or spousal support to wait for a 500 so we got a well specced petrol 320. Perhaps just add well as the 18mpg we've just got towing our caravan with the petrol 320 is bad enough!
We did focus on getting a decent spec though and the airmatic, harman kardon, memory seats etc. all contribute to making it a great cruiser. I like the comand system, I got a new nav disk for £100 from the main dealer and use it a lot. The tomtom rarely comes out, I used to use waze which was better, but the convenience of an indash system is good.
All that said, it isn't a special car in the same way a 124 estate is, I'm not growing the same attachment and considering a GL next. I have found getting rid of the 124 a wrench and still miss it 2 years on. We have a 107 for the classic fix though and not enough space for 2 estates so life dictates the way forward.
