I love these old e23 7s, so wish I had put my old one in a garage rather than selling it. Their old-schoolness is core to their appeal to me. http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C805633

The surviving ones seem to be disproportionately white. This suits the car, I think.

I went to see this delightful w202 earlier. Gingercators and poverty spec make it appeal all the more.

However.

It shunts when changing gear. Better if you ease off the gas whilst it changes (you need to be psychic) but definitely evident.

Obviously we start with the ATF. After that, what?

It's neither cheap or expensive so would like an idea of what might be heading my way.

Do these have a vacuum modulator?

Otherwise I'd get your man to drive it. Assuming you have one. Which I seem to recall you do. I'll ask mine next time I see him.

Really enjoyed reading this thread as a lurker, now I know more than I really should about gingercators (got very excited at seeing a W123 taxi while in Berlin this week)

Locking keys in thread budget Marc -

Did the exact same thing in France in an underground multi story. Had only owned my W209 about a month, locked car, popped boot with key as I left my umbrella, slammed boot....literally cried out in terror.

Recovery guy broke into car (in 20secs worryingly) but couldn't get into sealed boot. I Phoned 2 French mercedes dealers they said "there is no solution".

There is a solution and it's -bizarre and requires two people, google saved my holiday.

I never pop the boot with the car locked now....

Keep up the good work with these finds!

Got to chip in on the locking keys in boot of Mercedes post.

Did the exact same thing in France in an underground multi story last year (worst place to break down as impossible to tow out). Had only owned my W209 (now in thread budget unfortunately!) about a month, locked car, popped boot with key as I left my umbrella, slammed boot....literally cried out in terror.

Recovery guy broke into car (in 20secs worryingly) but couldn't get into sealed boot. Phoned Mercedes they said "there is no solution".

A great first post NitJay, welcome to the thread smile

20 seconds is worrying for a fairly modern car!

Thanks! I won't post the method but the design of the 209 doesn't help.

If you've got anything valuable.....put it in the boot they won't get in there. You can't even pick the lock (apparently).

'New MoT til late Oct. 2017' So it's been advertised for a year?

Lower down that page is a 745i, but it's out of budget and perhaps more suited to a Best smoker barges engines thread.

http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C881797

I'm having nagging doubts the 745i was an I6 turbo.

The South Africa 745i was the M88/3 M5 and M635CSi engine with either a manual or switchable auto gearbox; for the rest of the world the 745i was a turbocharged I6 in lhd only.

Chaps - slightly off topic, but are any threadists attending the Silverstone Classic this weekend?

I'm taking the SLC and will park up on the MB stand on Saturday. Would be nice to catch up with any fellow losers that might be attending. Looking at the weather forecast, my decision to camp all weekend (avec Madame deG) might have been a foolish one!

Is that a garage in Uxbridge by any chance?

Apologies for the slight thread de-rail, but I've just realised why there are so few private sales these days - it's a logistical nightmare.

I'm due to view / purchase / collect a car this evening (only semi thread-worthy). So far it seems the hurdles to doing so include:

- That I need to be insured on the new car, but need to continue to insure the old car until I find a buyer (under the CIE requirements). My insurer wants what seemed like an unreasonable sum to cover both, until I got quotes from specialist brokers which were multiples of that amount

- I can't use the third party cover I get on my existing insurance, since this is no longer valid the moment I own the car

- I can't just swap the insurance to the new car, as legally I would have to SORN my existing car which makes viewings / test drives impossible

- The VED regulations mean that I need to arrange tax immediately after purchase. Just a pest to have to pay a full month's tax to only get the remaining three days in the month...

I've gone £1500 over budget... might be reachable with a very strong haggle... however, this is a great example of an awful lot of car, dropping ever closer towards top-thread budget as the days go by. Very comprehensive advert, dozens of very good images and what looks like a very detailed service history.

A near 400 bhp, leather-clad, bell & whistle laden wafter, and also bomb-proof..?

I'll wager someone else has already taken the hit of a very high % of all the depreciation this car will ever see.

Are these as bomb proof as the earlier LS400 though? Nice car all the same, people will think you've spent a lot more if you care for such things.

On my 4-speed R129 it was simply a case of getting all the little vacuum leaks sealed to turn it from "generally ok but occasionally brusque on upshifts into top" to "lovely all the time" , though a fluid and filter change is not going to hurt either

Re: Lexus LS460 (LS07 LEX)

Methinks the good doctor was a bit careless when it came to parking - the bumpers have seen better days. But at this price, it wouldn't be enough to put me off. Even the stratospheric mileage is acceptable in a car like this, especially with the full service history.

Give it a year or so, and these will be within thread top budget. Mmmm, creamy V8 waftiness. smile
