Good work!

I doubt you can buy a better big old car than an LS400. They still have the most remarkable ride and refinement even after 20+ years. At the time I drove one I had a K plate V8 730i that whilst a lovely thing, wasn't quite in the same league although a 740i would have been closer.

Whilst the W126 was (is) decidedly average, the W140 was much, much better. I had a rare LHD 350d diesel 10-15years ago but they really are enormous - just too big. And still not as refined as the Big Jap.
If you felt the W126 was average in 1979 when it came out you weren't paying attention. The 1989 LS400 certainly was more refined, but that's what a decade of automotive engineering evolution will do.

This was the big Toyota luxury saloon that was new out the same year as the W126

Another piece of st for your consideration:

Design classic from the same era:

I assume that is fake rust on the wheel arches and sills?

Can get a really good example for just over thread budget, are they ruinous to run? Excluding mpg of course.
Catastrophic engine failure is pretty common on the 4.5 S apparently: oddly the 4.5 turbo is generally considered pretty reliable.

In addition, drive shafts fail and the coolant pipes are a weak point. Electronics can be expensive to fix.

Long time lurker here. I am hoping to buy a 2001 Volvo V40 (KU51 FTZ) over the next week or so - I need a longer car for my new 9'6 surfboard - but thought I should run a few questions past any beards here. Unsure if I can post a link (it's on FB marketplace) here without breaking some rules. If someone could let me know if that's ok I'd appreciate it.

Does the front passenger seat in a V40 recline to almost flat?

I have discovered the following advisories: Central exhaust has a minor leak of exhaust gases (7.1.2), and; Nearside front coil spring corroded (2.4.c.1b). Some CV boot issues in previous MOTs but these seem to have been taken care of. Are these likely to cause me any great concern in a V40?

Apologies for the particularly long post, and thanks in advance.

Post the link.
We sort of self-regulate on this thread.

(Just hope no one else buys it before you!)

All sounds perfect for this thread then!

As per my previous post, here's the link. I am viewing it on Tuesday.

Any glaringly obvious issues?

Have just spotted a bit of rust and a strange panel gap towards the rear. I'm not too fussed about any cosmetic problems (unless they correspond to MOT failure or similar).

Are you aware of how to carry out an MOT history check?
That's usually the first IA of any threadist, so i'd start with that if you haven't.

Seems to be presented pretty well considering the asking price. I'd ask the history and go and view.
I've never owned a Volvo (though I spent some time fixing their trucks...) so can't help with any V40 specific pointers.

If the bloke seems alright, has 4 decent brand tyres, it's worth a go.

Some very good W126/Lexarse/124 posts.

The W126 was probably a very good car. I never liked them, and the low values even after all this time says that they are unlikely to ever be a valuable classic. It's just a big ugly old car, and the LS400 does the job a lot better because it's newer as you say. Old 7 Series like mine as well, not worth a carrot.

You're right about W124 quality - I see a couple of C/D plate ones around here that are remarkably unrusty including a LHD 200D that moves with the speed of a three legged hunting tortoise.

Exhaust may just need shoving together and brackets/pipe clips/clamps tightening up, but if not they don't look too pricey for sections

I've yet to own a non-new car which hasn't had a corroded spring or two.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, have checked the MOT history online. All seems OK (a couple of fails over the past couple of years but each time rectified), and no evidence of clocking (as you might expect on a car with 150k).

Fingers crossed that all goes well with the viewing.

I wish they would have mentioned the rust, as it makes you think they might not have mentioned other stuff. It's cheap at the end of the day, but it's annoying to go and see a turd of a car.

These are a bit of a cockroach of a car. Dull, and not really a volvo if I remember correctly, but robust enough. A few friends have owned one that gets passed around for misery duties (station car, home renovation, skint student transport).

Brilliant news! I am indeed a skint student, and the only reason I am getting rid of my Corolla (another cockroach) is because it's not big enough.

Speaking of turds, looks like the dogs have smashed a few into the boot carpet smile

Love those interior pics. They scream "We had the bloody thing to bits looking for the problem, couldn't find it, and gave up." hehe

The only person I would recommend that car to would be a fully qualified Porsche Master Technician (with an easygoing boss, and full access to all the fancy Porsche diagnostic kit), and even then, would advise him to hand over no more than £2k for it! laugh

That sounds generous! I'd call it a scrap car now. Bringing that back to being nice would be far too expensive and take far too much time to make it worth more than that
