Best smoker barges 1-5 large [vol11]
Discussion
Any interest in these? Seems a bit dear for a 2 litre one, but if it's as fresh and pampered as the seller claims...
Pre facelift too, with the (IMO) nicer front end

So I've been looking to move my s124 on and have made arrangements to ship it to the mainland to be listed with a specialist. Had a slight distraction:
Came across a localish ad with no pictures on Sunday. Sounded interesting so made contact. Viewed it and drove back the 100 miles home this morning.
3 owners, good spec, 94k on the clock, EVERYTHING done by mb main dealer from new.

With fancy paint?
Had both a first gen IS200 manual and a second gen250 Auto.
IS200: Lovely engine noise from the straight 6, but slow and appalling fuel consumption however you drove it. Interesting instruments, alloy wheels made out of cheese, paint susceptible to chips. Nice snickers gear change, clutch juddered. Avoid the 4-speed auto: slower and unresponsive. CD changer jammed.
IS250: If the IS200 is more like a Japanese BMW, the 250 is more like a Japanese Mercedes. Having driven 250 Manual and Auto and 220D, the 250 Auto comes across as the car they wanted to make with the manual and the diesel a bit of afterthought. Not massively fast, and not as good noise as the 200, but smooth enough. Good standard spec. Get one with the Sat Nav/Mark Levinson/Reversing Camera: all useful additions. wheels still made of cheese, paint still thin. CD changer jammed. Flappy paddles are lovely brushed aluminium , much nicer than the plastic ones in the current model.
Both impeccably reliable, never let down by either of them and ran them both for years with no form of warranty. Something I'd never consider with my current BMW.

I'd echo the IS200 sentiments. I averaged a calculated 31/32ish over 28k miles in mine. Not great, not bad. The straight 6 made up for it with a lovely howl.IS200: Lovely engine noise from the straight 6, but slow and appalling fuel consumption however you drove it. Manual box was pretty nice to use. No cruise control though on the manual.
CD player jammed. Fixed on my dining room table in 30 minutes. Never happened again as I bought a unit which plugged into the rear ports and replicated an external CD changer and had ports for SD cards and USB. £80 or so.
Hifi sounded brilliant.
Wheels definitely made of cheese, but a refurb worked wonders for them.
Cambelt change, at Lexus, was £139.
Traded it for an S-Type Jag V6 diesel. The gearbox in which lasted an hour shy of 21 days

I've decided to go the whole hog with my gold/brown w124 so its with "the man" for the works. Looking forward to seeing it in all its 70s style glory.
Is there a similar thread "man" for fixing the oily bits on w124s? I live in Bath and I've seen a couple of local (ish) places with reasonable prices and reputations but interested if there are other options.
R129 - thanks for your emails btw.
The C6 is very definitely thread material and will probably be always welcomed. As for that Rover, niiice, very old school. Looks in damned good nick as well, though even in a (Rover) barge I very much prefer a manual as I'm used to the foibles of the manual gearbox in Rover cars plus there's something about lazily going up and down the gears myself that appeals.

What are peoples thoughts on the Citroen C6. Worthy of the barge thread?

While your car is in Gateshead, you might want to send it to Baister at Staithes Garage, just round the corner. While undoubtedly sloppy in oh-so-many respects, nobody can better diagnose and repair Mercs of this vintage than him. And he's cheap. I have a chum who drives his 107 up from London, gets the train back, then returns a few weeks later to collect. You just have to hassle him a lot about deadlines.harrykul said:

Incredibly clean MOT history on this Double Six. Lovely colour but unfortunately he has used a potato to take the photographs!
