What amazes me is the variety and odd-seeming combinations of options on 211s...

Mine has both sides memory + dynamic seats, but no bum warmers/coolers. Airmatic but no COMAND or digi climate.

Lots of them seem to have heated seats but no memory, and again smatterings of COMAND all over as well.

W124 is a bit shagged IMHO.

I do like the new garage-address-on-MOT-history feature. For years that car was in Basildon, rarely turning a wheel and being nodded through by the same shop or two. Pretty much a decade of clean passes up until 2015 when at a different tester and only 127 indicated miles since the last test it fails on 9 separate counts and picks up 5 advisories.

Needless to say in 2016 it was back to one of the previous places.

I had not seen that before, that is an excellent update.

I can now see where one of my old cars goes every year for an MOT - gives me a route to tracking down the owner idea

Good work, Gadget.

I suppose in combination with published pass/fail rates, you could get a gist of whether one was too lax or the other too strict?

Are pass/fail rates published? I know they're measured and reported internally.

Lovely machine, such a bargain at barely over a bag.
Its on Scumtree too if anyone wants to see more:

https://www.gumtree.com/p/volvo/volvo-v70-2.3-t5-s...

What sort of motorway MPG would one of those see?
Can't help with the MPG but that seems excellent value. Good spot.
No idea on the mpg, but the steering wheel is on upside down. Not a difficult fix if you have the right tools, but something to keep in mind.

(Looks perfect.)
Volvo looks like a good deal! Assuming its a pre-ETM car too. Manual smile

The Teallite Blue s211 looks nice.

The m112 V6 is bullet proof. Some early US cars had problems with the crankshaft vibration damper but it is an updated part on that car. It is a much more reliable engine than the diesels, extremely smooth, but not that fast. Quite thirsty, too.

That car has nappa leather, very nice.

It looks good, if modestly specced (no heated or memory seats, no COMAND). It has been for sale for at least two months. It will be a bargain.

On 211s generally, airmatic gives a really fantastic ride quality, with "sporty" handling if you prefer to travel in discomfort. Estates have self-levelling at the rear which is provided by way of half an airmatic system. It seems very reliable in that configuration. The "sport" suspension is generally regarded as unpleasantly firm on UK roads, especially when coupled with the 18" wheels that were fitted to "sport" cars.
SBC braking module could be nearing end of life. What's the bearded ones view on this issue?

You buy a new one approximately once a decade. They are several hundred quid from Bosch.

Probably going to look at this on Saturday. Am after a non silver or black 211 wagon. Ideally wanted sunroof, Harmon Kardon, air suspension and heated seats. This one has sunroof, wood and leather wheel and rear blinds. MB history til 2015.

Have had 2 previous 211's (straight 6 and V6 320's) but not had a petrol. Any issues??

Now that I like and something I'd seriously consider getting out of my D2 for. Didn't realise they were down to this price point

Regarding the SBC pump, you can work out the manufacture date of the pump if you decode it's serial number. It would be possible to figure out if it's already been replaced but missing from any documentation. Do it before before you bought it and you can somewhat mitigate the risk. Really though, this the reason they are cheap, buy one and keep some cash aside as borksurance.

thought this looked awesome until I checked the MOT history: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

can't even put the mileage difference down to a misskey as they type the same thing in the description

I have never considered the MOT legit - I've had cars in the past fly through for years with a known garage. All I think when I see '1 year MOT' is: I have a whole year to find the true state of the car and rectify anything before the next test

its the mileage discrepancy chap, not the things picked up (or not) during the test - looks like the car's been clocked.

You're worried about a 30k mileage discrepancy on a 160k+ tramps hut ?

Bit harsh hehe

Seriously, if it stops and it goes well enough (which it will), I wouldn't be worrying for under a grand.

It shouldn't be on the wheels in the advert pics, nor should it be on 15" wheels. It should be on Style 33 or Style 48. 16x8 in both cases. Pics at these links.

It does come with the 17" wheels as pictured. However, the photos don't really show it up (unless they have swapped for the ad) but every one of them has been kerbed round the whole perimeter and most of them the paint has lifted through the spokes. They would all need a refurb IMO. The spare in the boot has been knocked into something denting the rim - might need even more than a refurb.

It looks better in the pics than it does in person. I have a leather interior with comfort seats from my 540 that I would have put into it if I bought it and the correct stereo to swap from that car too so neither of those put me off if the body was as good as it looked. However, there is a scrape down one side on the rear, cracking the tail lamp and rust is taking hold in the light aperture. There is also quite a dent in the bonnet around the right kidney grille, cracking the grille too, which is visible in the pics once pointed out and you zoom in there. Also a dent in passenger door but that's nothing more than you would expect on a 16 year old car I guess.

The seats are manual, not electric as listed in the ad, and the cloth is looking a bit tired and dirty throughout. The SRS airbag light is on, which I think is an MOT failure, as may be the non-factory HID headlights that have been fitted, although maybe a friendly tester would allow that? I'm not sure if the swapping of the lights has confused the system as it is showing a blown light on the display but they all seemed to be working when I checked. The tyres are all 'budget' never-heard-of brand. Most of the toolkit in the boot is there, as is the CD changer but I presume that doesn't work with the head unit up front - certainly the volume/track buttons in the steering wheel don't work with it. The PDC is not working, which is possibly just a sensor on the blink. There's mayo in the oil cap so perhaps some cooling/HG problem looming as well.

Dealer chap seemed nice enough though and maybe at that price the above faults are to be expected as the price is certainly pretty cheap but I'll be carrying on looking.

Mines back on Ebay, the CLS, one buyer didnt fit due to being a bit powerfully built and the other passed even though he couldn't fault the car, if it doesn't grab you doesn't make sense to buy it, so its still available, its easy to find, not sure of the rules on touting your own stuff but people did express an interest.

Spending more on a better one would probably be cheaper in the end.
