Yep, RWD and rain simply aren't compatible. Apparently.
If you have 612 bhp you probably want to be able to occasionally use it, of course you can drive it perfectly happily but the slightest attempt to use any of that potentially will have it lurching and that little yellow light blinking like mad, my car has a decent hot hatches worth less power and struggles, it isn't even about going that fast, its getting out of junctions, overtaking, roundabouts as the limits are surprisingly low. Now, being able to deploy all that power is great, ok, still need to stop and physics still apply but it makes this car a bit more of an all rounder, even when you aren't going quickly it is a benefit, it looks like it may actually snow this year, winters on, stick the suspension in its highest setting it would be pretty unstoppable.
I would imagine that a lot of people who might have bought these would veer towards the Audi showroom if its a daily or they live in areas with adverse weather, Audi are fast losing their usp and Mercedes AMG have kept theirs to a certain extent as you can make it RWD for smoky, slidy nonsense that most owners don't do, but it will keep the city based "look at me doing skids in the high street" types happy.
Whilst I absolutely love the car, I think these 'hot saloons' are in danger of becoming too expensive.
I would be interested to know what the price of the car tested was. I suspect around £90k at least, which starts to put's it in quite a premium price bracket where buyers will want a package which is significantly more exclusive and different to that of which somebody paying £250pm on a lease is getting.
£90k can get you some very nice metal which would be hard to ignore.

Yeah, but in the context of other luxurious, 4wd, 600 odd bhp cars ?I would be interested to know what the price of the car tested was. I know what you mean, most E classes I see are taxis really.
Still, awesome for me and other Merc bottom feeders in ten years
Awesome car.
Maybe it's me but that screen doesn't sit right in a car of this type. If I was paying that sort of money a nice bespoke instrument cluster is what I would want rather than a LCD screen. At the very least it could have been properly integrated as it still looks stuck on to me.
Still adds to MBs profit margins and the customer think they are getting something superior.

'Drifting' is juvenile nonsense. Quite why AMG provides such an option is unclear; why disable the safety of 4WD in such an overpowered car just to destroy your tyres?
Those who want to mess about in such a puerile manner should go and find themselves a secondhand Caterham Se7en.
Bore off! Those who want to mess about in such a puerile manner should go and find themselves a secondhand Caterham Se7en.
By your own logic, surely a Caterham 'Se7en' (not quite sure when they named it after a Hollywood movie, but there you go...) is 'juvenile nonsense'. I mean, quite why Caterham make such a car is unclear; why sell car that can only carry two people, with no ESP or ABS that can just burn through vast quantities of petrol for NO REASON?!
Those who want to mess about in such a puerile manner should go and find themselves a second hand Nissan Leaf..

I can see the point you're making. However what tasty metal in this class is a lot cheaper? The Audi RS6 is this sort of money. The M5 a bit less but merc have always been priced above BMW. The Panamera is closer to 120k, Jag are not in the same league. I have much more scorn for manufacturers who charge for things like a flat bottom steering wheels on a 100k car (Audi) or DAB radio when the ordinary VW for £35k comes standard with it.I would be interested to know what the price of the car tested was. from the first page, new E63 being all Audi and boring I think it is more a case of being like the old one but more capable when required rather than turning into an Audi from a few years back, even they are getting more into involvement rather than just all weather pace.

Just because I know you CANT use 516lb/ft when it's raining in a RWD car doesn't mean I don't WANT to use it. I think this switchable 4matic system is the perfect compromise. Nothing to do with driver ability and all to do with making the power that you've paid for useable across all seasons. If you don't want the power, can I suggest the 2-litre diseasel? There's nothing wrong with having 612 bhp available in this car.
But the first part of the review discusses pointless, irrelevant, absurdly puerile 'drifting' - which has absolutely zero relevance to sensible fast motoring.
Why ruin your tyres in such a daft way?
I'd prefer to have read more about the difference the variable 4WD now brings to the C63, rather than the Corsa-yoof-in-a-supermarket-car-park rubbish presented.
Sorry if that offends anyone.
Oh - and I drive an AMG, incidentally!
