Mk2, all day long. Styling is (still) perfect, noise is good, handling is lively enough to keep one on the toes. A bluecollar classic.

I drove a mk3 for some time last weekend...

Feels quite laggy but rapid on full boost.

Steering very keen to turn in; to the point of being a little surprising initially

A minor gripe for me (with my size 11 shoes) was the pedal box - coming off the clutch to the foot rest was annoying - seemed to catch the pedal when doing so and felt like little room to the left of the clutch pedal. Minor point but annoying for me.

The dash layout and steering wheel controls were dreadful and the infotainment/nav was completely unintuitive - again a minor gripe as it's not what's really important with this type of car.

It had the Recaros' and I felt I was riding high and not low slung like I prefer.

Nice car etc but my Type R has far more sense of 'occasion' and feels a little sharper and just more focussed overall. Looks wise then being used to the garish Type R then the Focus looks rather bland - like a half arsed job in terms of looks and aggression. That though may be a good attraction for some, I like hot hatches to be shouty and snarly though smile

I bet it doesn't.. I don't see why Ford would claim this, it seems odd. I know they do claim it, but I smell bullst. Nobody quotes weights including the driver - hell, for a little bit more weight saving throughout the car they could've wheeled out a "launch edition" under 1500kgs, which we'd all have been very impressed about (and would've skewed our judgements (positively) forever more). I'd put money on it actually just weighing 1600kgs.

Mk2 every day for me - it's not my favourite hatch as I think it always looked very heavy, but it's hands down more desirable and genuine than the new car.
I bet it does. EU Unladen includes a driver and 90% fuel.

That and the fact I had one on the scales yesterday and it weighed in at 1527 kg (forged wheels and Recaro shells). Sounds surprisingly good for a 4 pot as well.

You'll be pleased to see another one has just been posted.

Can someone please give the PH crew another car so we can read about it.

I'd have the Mk1, but of these two the Mk2 is hugely more appealing to me. The Mk3 is rather dull and dowdy. At least the Mk2 had the wild looks and noise. The Mk3 is about as exciting as a Golf R, but without the class.

I was on my way to arrange a test drive in the new RS. Stopped for fuel and noticed a green mk2 for sale but garage sales was closed. Continued on to look around the new RS. Agreed to come back for a test drive as it wasn't possible at the time. On way home noticed the forecourt with the green mk2 was open. He chucked me the keys and told me to have a go. The car was mine an hour later.
The engine is stunning. It may not be as polished as the new kids on the block but as a real road drivers car it is immensely involving and satisfying.
It also looks stunning!

Perhaps controversial but I prefer the look of the mk3 to the mk2. The mk2 focus never looked right to my eyes and no amount of stick on vents and arches can fix it. The mk1 is a much better looker than either of them, though!

You see. What you've done there is used facts and logic. They'll never work on PH forums.

  • interesting to hear. It certainly doesn't feel a heavy car to drive, and would seem, logically, to be a similar weight to it's competition.

The looks of the MK3 leave me stone cold, and 300bhp or more in a 8 year old front wheel drive car doesn't inspire me to chuck £20k at it either. If Ford had made the MK2 even RWD I think they could have sold it for years.

Another vote for the Mk2 here.

Whilst the blue on the Mk3 is nice, the 5 doors and the far-too-subtle looks just isn't something I aspire to.

Rather a Mk1 than a Mk3 smile

The new RS just looks a bit dull, a better car of course, but the old car looks the part.
It's like the new Mustang really, the old car looks like a muscle car and the new one looks a bit tame.
World cars....good on paper, and for saving the car companies money.

I'm sure I'm being really silly but I cant seem to get the option menu shown at this point in the video! Does this subsection allow me to set my car to default to sport mode? Apologies for the ignorance, I haven't had the car very long!!

I've driven a mk3 but not a mk2 but something keeps me looking back at a mk2.

Personally for everyday I like the subtlety of the the mk3 although maybe that's to miss the point with an RS ford.
