Performance stats BMW 850?
Discussion
Anyone have any facts and figures about these? Only because I came across a video on Youtube naming it as one of the worst performance cars of all time, I can no longer find the video but...
5 Litre V12 - 300bhp - true.
Weight - not that far off 2 tons - true
0-60 - not far off 9 seconds.
Online stats claim 0-60 in 6 seconds - hard to believe such an underpowered lard arse would be capable of that.
Any know the truth?

No, 6.5-6.8s is about right. Check contemporary tests of the 840 and 850 - the standard 850 is very little quicker than the 840, because there's actually f'all in the hp difference and it is heavier. But the 840 is basically a mechanical equiv of an E34 540 (albeit at Touring weight) and these are not slow cars. More of 'a thing' is the effortless long -distance lunge capability. 0-60 is for the unimaginative at best.
tl;dr; don't believe much of anything on youtube.

- Huff's rough sense-check, which works for many cars: kerb weight in (kilos/hp) +0.3to0.5 = fairly honest expectation of 0-60. 1900kg/300 = 6.3, so 6.8 entirely believable.

There were also a number of prototype 830i rumoured to have been built and then destroyed, using the late E34 530i's V8. I've never seen any actual proof that these were ever built, but this diagram for E31 parts availability suggests it might have been planned: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=EG21-...

Lovely looking cars. So sleek.
Yes, saw one this evening for the first time in ages.ging84 said:
It came out in 1989
there were not many normal engines producing more than 300hp of any size
It was 24v head, so was not really the most modern or high performance engine
Same engine re tuned with a 48v head was in the mclaren F1
I do think that's entirely correct. there were not many normal engines producing more than 300hp of any size

Iirc the f1 engine was heavily based on the e36 m3 engine and the block was a custom design for the project.

Yeah, a 320D would probably outdrag it, well, a 325D definitely would but what a hollow victory that would be.there were not many normal engines producing more than 300hp of any size

Getting on for a 30 year old design, still looks amazingly good and it is fast enough really, it is just things have got a bit daft these days, you can get a 1 series with 40 bhp more that isnt even an M car.
Amazing how we are all obsessed with being pinned to the seat by acceleration.
