Give it a once over, starts, goes and stops, no complete howlers, haggle down to £900, get it home then make a list of what needs doing.
Cat D matters not one iota at this age and price, I would take a straight looking body and interior over a scruffy one without the marker.
These are going to start going back up I reckon as they dwindle and then folk get nostalgic for old school hatches that arent 400 bhp, 4wd and weigh 1500 kilos plus.
I always think these were better than the 205 which I do like but feel really old, these are still modern enough to be safe, still fairly light and go well, nearly bought one but ended up with another Saab, the engines feel a bit weedy when you are used to turbo or big capacity stuff, plus the driving position is a bit weird, but I still kind of think I missed out and would have grown to appreciate it more than the Saab 9-3 Aero I did buy.

As you say the aero has lots of oomph but i miss the handling and nimbleness ( is that even a word ? ) of the cup.
This has been on Autotrader for ages now. It was originally up for about £1500 i'm sure and has dropped gradually due to no interest, i presume.
Great Shed in terms of the car. This one, specifically, i wouldn't go near. In fact, any Renaultsport at shed price would be a no-go for me.

Yep - a great buy, and there's no reason it couldn't be a great deal. I've had an identical one for 3 years now. Aside from the cambelt (done as a preventative measure after having owned it 6 months and decided to invest in it), i've put Toyo shod 15" wheels on (Saving the 16"s for the inevitable re-sale) and bought it a new battery. It cost me £1300 back in 2014 but had a years tax and a full tank of fuel so effectively £1k. Can't bring myself to get rid of it now. The silver wings do look a different shade in photos though...

Why not?I bought mine well under shed price and have done 32k in it with only a few minor issues(couple of sensors). It's now on 132k and the engine feels strong still. I have no issue doing 50 miles/day in it and I rely on it for work.
The market has fallen through the floor for these and they are a massive bargain at £1k.

Just a bit of a gamble in my eyes but i suppose it would be for anything in that respect.I bought mine well under shed price and have done 32k in it with only a few minor issues(couple of sensors). I'd rather pay a bit more and get one off an enthusiast with alot of the stuff already done for one of these.

There's a possibility this one might have had this stuff done and it just happens to be a massive bargain. The steering wheel isn't 'melted' for a start which is a good omen as are the contisports. It looks straight enough and I can't see there being many other cars this much fun for so little cash. I'd rather pay a bit more and get one off an enthusiast with alot of the stuff already done for one of these.
They are so simple you can have a crack at a lot of work yourself, used parts supply is plentiful and cheap on cliosport. If I didn't already have one I'd probably buy it!

There are no turbos to worry about.
If it's not leaking oil , the clutch isn't slipping/high and there's real proof of the cambelt change then what more do you want for under a grand?

Very good point. It's probably me being my usual pessimist self. After leasing my last few cars i suppose used car ownership is something that i'm secretly fearing in the back of my mind. They are so simple you can have a crack at a lot of work yourself, used parts supply is plentiful and cheap on cliosport. I don't like criticising SOTW but if you are going to chose a car with no details and no provable MOT, at least call the seller for a few details before you write the article!
It probably will come with an MOT being a trade sale. Whether it's an honest one is another question entirely!

Exhausts rust badly and an OEM Renault version is expensive, which means an aftermarket stainless steel one need purchasing and fitting. There are no turbos to worry about.

The gearbox's on these can completely go and need a rebuild/replacement. It's not guaranteed but not unheard of either.
Cambelt/aux belt/dephaser and tensioners need doing at a specialist, otherwise the timing will be out and will sound like a bag of spanners and be low on power.

You need to go in with your eyes open and treat it as a gamble some you win and some you loose, if you never want to loose stick with a full lease where all the maintenance, tyres etc is done for you.

Re the exhausts nobody replaces them with oem there's a wide range of aftermarket replacements.
Some people seem to want a car for under a grand and it all to be 100% perfect , you can't have your cake and eat it.
