My rhd MB doesn't crab at all. Do you mean SOME MBs?
Is yours a 4wd GLC? If not then what your car does is irrelevant.

The fact is, they've messed up the front diff on GLC in the conversion from LHD to RHD. There's a tech note about it somewhere. Softer tyres work around the issue, but it's still there.
Certainly looks like it's not the tyres. I'd imagine that because not all of the GLCs display this effect, and the fact some that do can be made tolerable with different tyres, MB will continue to quibble.

Bumping this thread as weather is turning colder. I'm still tempted by a GLC 43 but concerned that crabbing would drive me mad. How are you getting on out there guys?

Hi
Just got the new Mercedes c43 convertible .car is beautiful only one thing spoils it

Tyre skipping and juddering is really bad .
Got it out the garage yesterday to take it to my local Mercedes garage to have the active park assist sorted out .
I had it delivered back to my house and one of the service techs was driving the car back.
I said to him did he notice the tyre skipping on full lock and he said he did notice and said the car was juddering .
He then see me park the car round the back of my house as I was on full lock in forward and reverse positions and he just could not believe how bad it was.
I can tell you that it seems like the tyre is going to come of the rim.
On block pavers roads is the worst ever as the tyre catches the edge of the blocks and tries to raise them from the ground.
The Dunlop tyres are not good for the cars when 4matic system in use.
Just brought the car 6 weeks ago and because of the tyre skipping issue I've done 500miles.
Every time I drive it the tyres slide .
Mercedes say that this is safe

How can it be if it's 4 wheel drive and your loosing traction on slip.

The noise is terrible and can be noticed by anyone ,even manoeuvring in a petrol station and the tyres slip and can be heard
AMG and it does this .
Other than that the car is superb

I picked up a GLC yesterday (250d 4Matic) - skipping/crabbing from the moment I pulled off the dealership. I had read about it but figured they'd have sorted it by now. I don't spend too much time in car parks but if my tyres end up like some of those I've seen on here after a few thousand miles I'll be quite upset!

Forgive me for asking but why on earth did you buy it if you knew there was an issue? Didn't you ask the dealer if it was resolved?

Its nothing to do with Dunlop tyres, its geometry & very wide tyres. My S5 does it and has done with Continentals, Goodyear Eagle F1's and PZeros.

As I think I posted back on page 1 - our Transit Custom Sport on 18" wheels and Goodyears does it on full lock.

This is not just a Mercedes problem.

Well, I'm grateful to those who reported this issue. I was considering a GLC until this came up; I'd be going through 10 sets of tyres a year based on some of the pictures.

My 911 suffered tyre skipping last year on Contis ... no problem this year so far on MPS4S ... so it's also tyre dependent

I have read through the 16 pages with interest and i apologise if this has already been mentioned but i couldn't see it in any previous responses.

I purchased my GLC 250d Coupe at the end of January and after a week noticed the skipping. Straight away i notified Mercedes and they came back with the usual reply which most of you has had. I thought this was a valid excuse and decided to admit it could be just a wide tyre issue or temperature related. Below is my email!

Morning Will,

Just a quick update on the GLC Coupe I collected last Monday. Due to work etc I finally managed to give it a good run over the weekend and I’m thoroughly happy with the vehicle. However, It has come to my attention a few things which need to be rectified.

Bodywork.
Upon cleaning it yesterday, I noticed the wing mirrors were covered in black vinyl stickers. I am aware this model came with something called the night package or similar where the wing mirrors were black, but I assumed this would be sprayed with black paint and not wrapped in vinyl. The vinyl is starting to peel/bubble on the inside of the mirrors and therefore needs to be put right.

Warning Lights.
Over the weekend I also had a couple of different warning lights appear on the dash board. One being ‘Front left passenger fault’ which I believe is something to do with the airbag and also ‘Restraint malfunction’ which again could be a seatbelt/airbag problem.

Interior.
One of my passengers noticed the odd colour difference near the centre console which cannot seem to be wiped away. My only thought regarding this is where I had a ‘Supagard protection’ carried out on the vehicle last week and this has been missed during the cleaning process. Also smear marks were found on the top of the dash board which again couldn't be removed by hand.

Transmission.
I have a vast amount of motoring experience at an international level so I feel as though I'm in a strong position to comment on this next problem which is a big concern of mine. When turning the vehicle off my driveway or around tight corners, I have noticed a large banging noise coming from possibly the transmission system. Whilst it does only happen in tight situations, I feel with the calibre and reputation Mercedes have this should not be happening.

I have experienced this problem before throughout my motorsport career and it was a simple explanation, the tyres on the car were odd sizes causing the transmission system to ‘wind up’ the transmission systems transfer box and therefore creating a small bang when released. I did check the tyre sizes on the vehicle this morning and can confirm there are odd tyres on the GLC Coupe.

I have also looked on the internet and found several owners have experienced the same problem. I’m confident of a quick solution being to change two tyres to match the front or rear pair currently on the vehicle. Even better would be to get a pair of wheels off a GLC Coupe at your dealership to test my theory at no expense to anyone!

I trust a quick response to my email with guidance of what the next steps are to rectify the problems.

Many Thanks

Nik Elsmore

My response as i said was a phone call saying the usual answer!

However, i have just collected a courtesy car Friday from them which is a GLC 250d SUV, this has no tyre skipping at all which i found surprising because i believe its on the exact same chassis and running gear than the coupe model. I then compared the tyre sizes and noticed the tyre sizes on the SUV model (255/45/R20's) is the same all round using Goodyears, the ones on the Coupe are the same size (albeit Michelin versions) on the front than the SUV but a lower profile on the back (285/40/R20).

Has anyone tried running the Coupe version on all the same size tyres? Did it work?

Thanks in advance Nik.

Have you asked them if you can swap the wheels with yours as a test?

The difference in diameter on those tyres is probably less than running over rizla paper would cause.

We're not talking about diameter though, its the suppleness of the side walls
If he swaps them and his car is now ok - its the tyres
if it's not its the suspension set up

You didn't note the 'model' of the tyre did you? I wonder if they might have been All Seasons.

I think one could argue it's just another disadvantage of the current fashion for enormous wheels and rubber-band type tyres.
Absolutely! If these cars were on engineering-led 225/55 16 or 225/50 17 like they would have been 10 or 15 years ago we wouldn't have these fashion-induced phenomena.
My SLK does it on 16's or 17's - it's not a problem once you know what it is

He is explicitly talking about the diameter of the wheel/tyre combo since he thinks it may be transmission wind up. This can only hsppen if there is no centre diff or viscous coupling however, which seems vanishingly unlikely on a luxury 4wd SUV.

I’ve been onto the supplying dealer and Mercedes about the issue of juddering and it’s taken MB over 6 months and 4 visits to replace the tyres on the 20” rims and it’s not even a recognised brand. The ride is better, but not cured. I have tried to claim a refund under the sales of goods act, but MB won’t accept it, so I’ve taken my matter to the FO. So I’m awaiting there investigation. I was never advised about the issue before I purchased the car. Why would a person of sound mind and body purchase a £50k with a issue unfamiliar on any car made after 1975???? MB in Leeds won’t even respond to emails or calls now, so I’ve had 3 signs made about the car, service and dealership offering my personal experience. I’m so looking forward to parking outside the dealership, but I’m guessing they will speak or advise when the boards go up. As a customer you shouldn’t have to do this - it’s just MB arrogance. I will take pictures and load them up. Forgive me as I’m not the most photogenic person. NEVER AGAIN.

My year 2000 CLK55 tyre skips in car parks and also cold weather. Never really bothered me tbh.
