RE: Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS: Driven
Discussion
If you could only have one car, this... would not be it, in all likelihood. It has laughable carrying capacity, and anyone with a family is buggered, unless they want to be seen by child services for attempting to stuff children into it like a piece of home-made origami.
As for the driving experience, it seems strange to say it, but in the context of all the criticism in the article, I can only say... Lotus?

My 1992 RX7 with 340bhp isn't fun until you are way above the NSL.
Every time someone comes on here posting that they were driving over 100 or were caught speeding they are told they are on a par with a child killer yet manufacturers keep making and presumably PHers keep buying cars with limits so high they simply aren't fun until you are WAY over the limit.
Having read the Porsche forum your test is irrelevant - what are the essential options / image / residuals / investment potential ?
It's depressing.
I quite agree. My 1992 RX7 with 340bhp isn't fun until you are way above the NSL.

I read one magazine columnist recently (sorry, I can't recall who it was) he wrote about exactly this problem - his piece ended with the line, "you've got until 70mph to impress me"
What's the base price of a 991 turbo? And does it have much extra spec over the gts??
I know with other Marques such as BMW if you speccd up the M3 to M5 base levels you are really quite close to the bigger brother... not to mention the performance jump
Some people will no doubt get carried away on option lists and have tunnel vision ...

I had a 991.1 GTS and found it boring to drive.
I sold it and got a BMW 1M coupe.
Therefore I went from a station wagon to a go-cart-
The BMW far more exciting to drive and 60 grand cheaper.
Did you see the Chris Harris video on the 1M ( and M2 )? I was interested he seems to really rate it after having stuff like a GT3. Of course you never really know with journos whetrher they're just saying that but he did go out and actually spend money on one I sold it and got a BMW 1M coupe.

Lovely machine. Some enthusiasts do make me smile. Not every car has to be a track weapon. Porsche make other versions that more ably fill that role. Not every car has to be affordable for the masses, either. Vauxhall will sell you a Corsa
The type of person that will be interested in this car is likely very wealthy, and already has other cars. This might be their daily driver. But remind me again how many E92 M3s you can buy instead? Value is also relative. To some people this kind of money is akin to deciding whether a packet of Space Raiders is better value than Walkers cheese & onion.
If I were extremely wealthy I would buy one of these just because, along with any other number of cars that are named as better value alternatives. I'd have a different color for each day of the week, and I'd enjoy it immensely as a daily hack whilst others, who can't afford one, bang on about steering feel, oversteer and driving flat-out everywhere and not losing their license. Somehow.
Regarding brutally honest auto journalism. If every journo was mercilessly honest about the cars they are given to drive, there would soon be nothing to review. We don't live in a perfect world, and the good writers word their articles in such a way that the astute reader is able to read between the lines and get an idea of whether or not they may like the car, so that (god forbid!) they might drive one themselves before forming their own opinion.

Just my two pence worth.
"Its too wide....." is it wider than the rest of the Carrera 4 / Turbos? or for that matter anything else that fits in this type of market segment?
Is the comment more likely because you were sat on the wrong side?
"The PDK doesn't add to the excitement...." it never has, drive a manual version.
I don't see either of the above as really car 'faults'
Well it's only 28mm narrower than a Turbo, and I think the issue is that the car is obviously much wider at the back than the front. The LHD will have made it harder to get used to, but fundamentally it never feels entirely at home on smaller roads. That seems a bit of a shame for a 911. As I said though, for many the looks will probably be a worthwhile trade-off."Its too wide....." is it wider than the rest of the Carrera 4 / Turbos? or for that matter anything else that fits in this type of market segment?

As for the PDK, I did say the engine would be better suited to a manual? The PDK could be more exciting though, just with small tweaks like larger paddles (see Alfa/Maserati/Clio RS) and a longer travel, just to feel like there's a bit more for the driver to do.

My kids are 10 and 12 and fit in my 911 fine. I'm sure the r8 and mclaren are great cars, but I they are just too OTT for the school run and the work carpark. Business as usual for a 911..and yes please in that colour.
Yeah, you definitely wouldn't get both in the frunk of the Macca or R8. likesachange said:
Yes the price of these modern 911's are insane.
Circa 135k for that spec .... almost mclaren 540..
My money would be on a R8 v10 Plus
Still lovely car but M3 performance for 2.5x the money
There is more to "performance" than simply horsepower. You compare M3 with 911 GTS? Please... :-)Circa 135k for that spec .... almost mclaren 540..

R8 v10 Plus is nice, magnificent engine, but costs more, has less space and is more "in your face". Just a totally different proposition from 911GTS...just like the 540.

I agree with you. My 3.4L BoxsterS with 315hp/360Nm is more fun to play with and drive in hairpins than my 570hp/780nm 911. Unfortunately manufacturers have to compete, so we get bigger cars with more power and more electronic gadgets than anyone ever will be able to utilize. The unavoidable progress. My 1992 RX7 with 340bhp isn't fun until you are way above the NSL.
