Black wheels - am I wrong?
Discussion
Definitely silver for me, I just prefer the colour contrast between the black tyre and silver wheel. Black wheels show up tyres that are in need of dressing and any mud.
If someone likes them, great, you run with that.
For me it is silver every time, so much so I would pay less for a car with black wheels.

Im in full agreement, the Porsche is fine as the polished dish breaks it up from the tyre, I dont mind this anywere near as much.
the silver rims make all the difference. Some Elans had black (steel) wheels, with chrome rim embellishers and chrome spinners... those look OK too, I think:

I think a gunmetal colour looks better on most cars, trouble with black is it makes the tyres look grey unless they are new or covered in tyre dressing.
AgreeBlack wheels can make the wheel arch appear "empty". The car looks unfinished.
Silver wheels on a dark car, dark silver or grey on a light car.
(Silver wheels on my yellow car though)
I grew up in the age of Sierras and Cavaliers which mostly came with wheel trims and which tended to lose them exposing the black wheel below.
To me, black wheels remind me of poorly maintained crap old cars.
On occasion they can work. There's a black XF near me with black wheels. The outer rims are silver. They just give the wheel a bit of definition and look great.

I used to think black wheels were cool, I’m now starting to think they look a bit tacky.
I was never a fan. They've always reminded me of black steel wheels when the plastic covers have fallen off. I don't mind them on modern classics where they're a distinct characteristic, such as some of the older 911s that they appear on. A particularly dislike them when they're shiny. That said, I don't like excessively shiny silver wheels either. Matt ones have grown on me and I think dark grey ones look good on some cars. Like most things, wheels work best when they're a colour that complements the bodywork nicely. I prefer silver wheels on dark coloured smart-looking cars and dark wheels on brightly coloured sporty-looking cars.va1o said:
I think it depends on the car and they generally look better when designed that way from the factory rather than painted. Also as pointed out they're sensitive to the colour of the car. I quite like the latest shape MINI in 'White Silver' with Black Alloys, wouldn't look right with anything else
My wife's car is same combination, black wheels look great by being such a contrast with the white silver paintwork. I run a White Golf GTD with mainly black wheels which I had no choice and I think white cars with black wheels are totally naff. Lastly, a current SC Range Rover in grey with black wheels this being my choice. I really like them in lots of cases but always did before it became fashionable. It's very subjective and as with everything total personal preference. I bought my Megane 225 new in 2006 and had the wheels powder coated black in early 2007. It wasn't actually that common to have black wheels back then and I love the contrast against the orange paintwork.
They are not especially detailed wheels so it's not like you lose anything by them being black.
Personally, I like darker wheels when they contrast the cars colour. So a bright car with black/grey wheels like a little hot hatch can work. But black wheels on a classier car like an AMG or M car just don't seem to work for me. So I guess hot hatch, some sports cars or track cars yes but saloons and more expensive machinery is a no.
Black wheels on a black car is an absolute no for me though.

Generally I dislike black wheels, they can look good but I find it's very rare.
The point about the wheels looking like their missing - heres a photo of my old Evo 5 with black wheels on (I bought the car with them on but they were changed in my ownership)

I think it's all to each persons taste. I don't like grey cars that seem to be the colour of choice these days.

Mine has black wheels too, it's arctic blue and theyre the multispoke cup ones but same effect, it contrasts nicely against the lairy paint and you can see the shiny red calipers more clearly. They are not especially detailed wheels so it's not like you lose anything by them being black.

Silver just looks cheap on the mk2
It depends on the car, depends on the colour, depends on the wheel design on the particular car. Even then people will like/dislike them. I like mine, but not all cars look good with them.
What fascinates me are the people who;'ve posted pictures on this thread with non-black wheels - what is that all about? Black is black, not dark silver!!
