106 rallye
That’s a difficult questions and totally subjective as these cars are obviously completely incomparable! It would be like comparing a 991 911 GT3 to a 993 Carrera. The 991 better in every way but in certain circumstances the 993 –with half the power but much smaller and lighter and more direct – would be more fun.
Would a 106 Rallye be more fun than a Leon Cupra 300 4Drive?
Hard to say
For me, not haven driven a 106 in about 10 years [and I never drove a Rallye but a friend had a 106 GTI so got to drive it loads times]. So I can guess what a rally would be like – similar but more direct, rawer, lighter etc. – great car a def. future classic!
I think in a dry sunny summer day, down a tight/bumpy/twisty b road the 106 all day long.
In a larger/wider b road or tightish a road I’d think the Leon Cupra R be more fun. Where you would get to use its performance and grip more. Esp. if it was wet or slippy then it would be nice to lean on the 4WD and try to get it to slide all 4 wheels
I wouldn’t want to crash either but if I did I would much prefer to crash the Leon
Actually there are modern cars that are close to the original Rally in power and weight, mostly Japanese. Would say a Swift Sport comes closest due it being sporty in nature and even with comparibly huge wheels, much taller and tons of luxury and safety equipment, it's only a good 100kg more (note) and 33hp more. I had one, good fun for sure and more fun than a Cupra in the right circumstances.
A Leon SC manual PP without options is about 400kg more than a 106 Rally. That's actually quite good give the size, safety and power differences. And easily 400kg lighter again than many premium 'performance' luxury coupes that are considered Big Performance but aren't necessarily any quicker down a given road. So ironically, it's the modern lightweight budget choice
note: key is comparing weight to the same standards.
