Well, now that you are casting aspersions are there any particular persons/posts that you might want to identify, or should most/all of the contributors to this thread consider themselves included? biggrin

It's a brick that handles like a Golf GTI, has awful suspension and uses twice as much fuel. The interior is easily worse than the Disco 3, but it's vast enough to bully its way along a narrow country lane or make an insecure wife feel safe when hitting other cars in Sainsbury's. With standard alloys it's not even very good off-road, which is kind of the point of it. Not even trendy enough to be bourgeois - I haven't an honest clue why anyone would buy one, unless they shave their head and are involved in the building trade.
"There's no hate from me."

Other than the cliche laden invective that's about to follow and no doubt underpinned by zero first hand experience.

Top work !
Thanks. Still no hate from me, though I would ask what makes you think I'd have done any more than a couple of drives in them given what I've written?

I didn't say I was insulted, I said I couldn't relate to your comments which I don't think are backed up by any real life experience.

Seems a bit odd to say "no hate" to then subsequently slag off the car and make a stereotyped negative assertion about the type of person who drives it doesn't it ?

As for the specifics it's clear you have almost zero experience so why bother with stupid statements like the interior is worse than a D3 ? Or that it's not good off road on standard wheels ? Purely for info as you won't care As it doesn't suit the generalisation the cars at LR experience centres run standard wheels and tyres but seem to cope with pretty extreme off road tasks.

Regarding the point made about the Disco Sport owner's thread then of course everybody likes different things. It takes a special kind of small mindedness though to actively seek out a thread in an forum about a car you are clearly not interested to inform a satisfied owner you don't like his car.

So a RRS is just like a Golf...... wow. I've seen it all now rolleyes

This new Velar will sel by the truckload and I'd fancy one as I drive across Europe and visit the Alps a few times a year... a RRS is a little too big. Had a Disco Sport which was the perfect size - but had to give it back to LR due to a B pillar click (known issue). The disco sport is a great all rounder and is let down by its interior - loved the 7 seats too. So size wise, this Velar will be what a lot of people are after - despite not having 7 seats...

Boring.

If everyone has an "aspirational" product, like a Range Rover, it's no longer aspirational. They're spreading the brand too thin and inviting others to steal their sales. If I was spending £100k on a top spec Range Rover, would I want other people thinking my neighbour in the £50k Velor / Evoque / Whatever had the same car?

Nope. Harsh but true.

They need a Defender replacement. Sales or no sales, it was the heart of the brand and gave the brand it's legitamacy. Without a Defender, Land Rover are just another Porsche, BMW, Merc or other generic "aspirational" brand.

Is anyone else getting tired of aspirational products? I've been very lucky in life so maybe that's coloured my perspective, but it seems so desperate to buy things principally because of what you think it says to other people about you.
yes I'd go with this..

Only problem with this argument is that it's the only realistic way for businesses to grow.

'LandRover is just another aspirational brand like Porsche or BMW'

Can you imagine anyone saying that when they were selling the original Freelander?

The Velar is going to be a great car. I think it will be far higher specification than Evoque. No chance this car sullies the Range Rover brand. Evoque did risk that but in reality it didn't happen - so you have to say they got it right.

LandRover now make excellent cars that are well matched to what buyers want. 'Premium SUV' aren't to everyone's taste. But don't kid yourself, these JLR cars have really nailed something that lots of buyers want.

Another few comparisons .....
Apple were the edgy alternative - now they're the generic / conformist brand. Against the wishes of early customers, massively successful business.
Lamborghini Gallardo.....
Bentley Continental.....

They all have to find methods of growing and it might / will reduce the exclusivity, but it funds growth, supports investment and keeps shareholders interested. These are businesses not special interest clubs.

And you can go to JLR and buy an as new Series 1 Land Rover or Range Rover Classic anyway so they still sell the old products any way. It's win win.
